Innovating for future success
As Jangro celebrates a milestone birthday, CEO Joanne Gilliard looks back at innovations the cleaning industry has seen over the past 40 years, and predicts what's next.
The cleaning industry is constantly evolving, with ever more technologies and innovations being launched to improve the quality and efficiency of cleaning and hygiene practice.
In fact, the cleaning sector has made huge advances in the past 40 years. Back in the 80s and 90s, it was considered to be ‘behind the times’. However, as we entered the 21st century, this began to change as modern technology became much more democratised.
Indeed, it has developed so phenomenally that now we cannot imagine life without the likes of smartphones, tablets and Wi-Fi. They have become indispensable: we’ve all had the horrifying experience of accidentally forgetting our mobile phone, and feeling like we’ve lost a limb. It’s no exaggeration; research has found that people who are separated from their smartphones can suffer from strong psychological and physiological effects.
Our love affair with innovation and technology is not only restricted to our personal lives either: it’s infiltrated our professions too. Adoption in the cleaning sector is now rapid given the cost and efficiency benefits delivered. After all, high-tech equipment, clever software and innovative ‘Internet of Things’ technology (or IoT, where ‘smart’ devices connect to the internet for better control and automation) have all become increasingly more affordable for commercial cleaning companies to implement.
The future is digital
At Jangro, we’re passionate about innovation in the cleaning and janitorial industry. It’s an area that we consistently invest in, but also balance with careful consideration. It’s important to question new technologies before rolling them out, to ensure they offer genuine improvements or benefits.
Will it make an operative’s job easier, quicker or safer? Will it help protect our environment? Will it help save money and improve business? The answer has to be yes to at least one of these questions as there’s little point in making changes for the sake of it.

One of the innovations that we are most proud of is our award-winning Learning Management Solution (LMS). Now accredited by the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Certification Service, this interactive, engaging e-learning tool is fully optimised for all types of devices. This makes our quality training easily accessible to all of our customers and enables their staff to train remotely and flexibly, at times that suit them.
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have also been making waves in the industry and this is set to continue. Last year we introduced Jangro’s first ever VR platform to help our customers from a planning and training perspective.
This innovative tool allows users to view seven virtual ‘worlds’ (a corridor, kitchen, reception, office, bar/restaurant area, washroom, and changing rooms), and enables the customer to see what products are required and how to clean that particular area. It also links to all relevant digital resources, including COSHH risk assessments, product usage guides, safety data sheets and relevant LMS modules and Task Cards.
Another recent innovation is our Digital Wall Chart creator, which enables customers to generate their own personalised wall charts, featuring the products of their choice. As well as the chart, customers receive a full health and safety compliance pack. The initial charts available were Washrooms and Kitchen Area, but watch out for our new ‘Hospitality’ chart coming soon.
Huge leaps have been made to develop products and services that are more sustainable, economical, and user-friendly. In turn, these innovations help best practice, planning, and maintenance be achieved easily and quickly. Working in partnership with technology, commercial cleaning companies and professional operatives can work more efficiently and, ultimately, deliver a better service to the end client.
