10 Questions with... Camilla Marcus-Dew
Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Camilla Marcus-Dew, Co-founder and Head of Sustainable at CLARITY-The Soap Co.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I have a strong memory of when I was about eight years
old, polishing cutlery at my auntie’s hotel in exchange for chips and cake. A bad dietary habit that dies hard.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? Around 2016, as CLARITY & Co. started selling our brands
into some of the big UK corporates, we got closer and closer to many of the key FMs and national distributors to help us penetrate the market. It’s been an eye-opening experience.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
Driven, practical and energetic.
IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?
Iceland’s fjords look spectacular and are on my bucket list, or Scandinavia to see the northern lights – aurora borealis. I have a thing for natural wonders.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
I’d love to see more positive social and environmental impact being created – which is certainly starting to happen, although there’s a long way to go. I think corporate social responsibility is no longer a tick box exercise and we hope we can play our part in encouraging the sector to generate ever more social value.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD
GIVE THEM? I would ask them to work out what really drives them – what they feel passionate about. And then I’d encourage them to do more of it in their 9-5 working day.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?
I would set up a social impact fund for bright ideas by driven people who can make a real impact.
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD
THEY BE AND WHY? I love Akala – he’s eloquent, knowledgeable and has some answers. David Attenborough for obvious reasons and Sarah Millican, just to bring a lighter tone.
WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
Less plastics, less chemicals, and much more social impact (I hope!)
Daniel Cross, UK Business Marketing Manager at Vaclensa (Part of Tennant Group), asks:

WHAT CHANGES DO YOU SEE COMING TO THE UK CLEANING INDUSTRY?
I think that some of the trends and buying preferences we are witnessing on the high street will become more prevalent in public spaces and ‘back of house’. So I expect ever more products that look to use alternatives to plastics in all packaging, that use more organic, eco-certified, sustainable and natural ingredients – and that give back to society in some way – will be in demand across many industry sectors.
