Wisconsin School Musician 2021-22 Themes
September 2021 • Music Education: Students at the Center Identifying student needs, designing curriculum that responds to those needs, and utilizing creative
teaching strategies to reach all youth through music is at the heart of our theme, “Music Education: Students at the Center.” This issue, also dedicated to the 2021 Wisconsin State Music Conference, kicks off a new school year, exploring the true essence of what it means and takes to effectively bring students back together, and to the center, with music as a key part of their well-rounded education.
January 2022 • Silver Linings
It has been said that “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” – Perhaps the 2020-21 school year gave full meaning to that old, English proverb as music educators broke barriers to discover and/or invent new ways of reaching and teaching students. This issue reflects upon the “Silver Linings” of those challenging times, revisiting adaptations and innovations that worked (and some that didn’t), all of which teachers and students alike can learn from in order to build a stronger future through possibilities and opportunities in music education.
April 2022 • FORWARD!
Embracing the future requires forward thinking, and when it comes to modern-day music education, that involves every note, every rhythm, every kid. In this edition, “FORWARD!” is an action theme… It’s about moving ahead with a broader view of the world and engaging all types of learners through diversity, equity, access and inclusion. It’s about stretching our boundaries and connecting music with other areas outside the arts; reaching beyond the big three of band, orchestra and choir to incorporate nontraditional music learning; taking steps to rebuild a music curriculum; implementing new technologies... Simply put, “FORWARD!” is about putting the music in motion for progress.
