student composition project

Student Composers Honored Victoria Donahue, Program Director

The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recog- nizes the efforts of Wisconsin’s student composers. This year a total of 115 submissions were received from 81 students with 102 submissions in the High School Division (grades 9–12), 6 in the Middle School Division (grades 7–8) and 7 in the Intermediate School Division (grades 4–6). Thirteen submissions received Honorable Mention distinctions and 43 submissions received awards which were based on merit in 12 categories.

The Student Composition Project provides student compos- ers in grades 4 through 12 the opportunity to receive feedback regarding the positive qualities of their piece as well as provide

ways to improve as a composer in the future. Each submission is evaluated and receives a written critique by a professional Wisconsin composer. Evaluators determine awards which will be presented to students at the awards ceremony. Division winners also receive a $200 scholarship and the opportunity to present their composition at the awards ceremony.

The virtual awards day is Saturday, May 8 via Zoom. There will be a composer Q&A session led by two Wisconsin com- posers followed by the awards ceremony. Music teachers and administrators are invited to attend. Please visit wsmamusic. org/composition_project/submissions for further information.
