government relations School Board Meetings

School board meetings are usually once or twice a month and typically open to the public. They are often recorded which allows you to reach a wider audience that goes beyond the concert hall. Consider preparing short presentations from the music department on a regular basis.

Topics could include but are not limited to:

• State standards (don’t assume your administrators and board members are familiar with these!).

• Student achievements (Solo & Ensemble, Composition, Honors

Ensembles).

• Commissioned works and compositions.

• Artist in residence series. WMEA Awards

Recognizing people who make a difference is one of the most rewarding activities for any organization. WMEA sponsors several ways to recognize those who have sustained a commitment to music education and made a positive impact in the school, community or state:

• Award for Excellence in Teaching (co-sponsored with WSMA) • 25+ Years of Teacher Service Recognition • Richard G. Gaarder Award • Distinguished Administrator Award

• Distinguished School Board Member Award

• Distinguished Legislator Award • Michael G. George Award • Community Service Award

• Melvin F. Pontious Creative Sparks in Music Education Award

Wisconsin School Musician 21

Ask students to prepare written statements sharing their thoughts on how music edu- cation has impacted their lives. They can deliver their statements in person to the board or statements can be pre-recorded and shared in a video such as this WMEA video recently used at the WMEA Ad- vocacy Virtual Drive-In Day with state legislators.
