“Addressing Con- temporary Learn- ing Needs” The Publications Committee pro- duced the theme for this issue over a year ago, in what I would now call “the an-
cient era of pre pandemic planning.” Reel forward to modern times, and the context could be rightfully tweaked if we simply added three exclamation marks (!!!) to signify its already-active role in the current school year… “Addressing Contemporary Learning Needs!!!”
There’s no doubt that amidst the shift- ing/pivoting/maneuvering (and all other words you no longer wish to see, say or hear), music educators have creatively found ways to become more tech savvy in reaching students through a plethora of engaging, online platforms. Technology, a 2020–21 lifesaver, is yet one component of addressing the needs of today’s learner.
In a complex society, amidst a fast-paced technological environment, it’s no won- der that the modern-day student can be overwhelmed with stimuli. Reaching all individuals through music education requires awareness and understanding of our diverse community of students, including LGBTQ, those with anxiety/ mental illness, gifted/high-achieving students – basically all youth, and the challenges and opportunities associated with their world.
From techniques using technology and social media to social skills development, this issue presents strategies and ideas for addressing a wide range of unique and contemporary learning needs.
