iListenWI

Great News for General Music Teachers Sharon Gilbert and Jackie Vandenberg, iListenWI Committee

‘my digital library.’ There you have access to iListenWI free materials as part of the awesome benefits of your membership.

Good News! At a time when singing is kept to a minimum and instruments must be sanitized between each use, lesson help is easily accessible to general music teachers. WMEA has put a plethora of iListenWI listening lesson files online for members to download and use at no cost, just by creating an account and logging in to the portal. All music listening skills can be taught in any setting whether it is in-person or virtual class sessions, and all students can gain much from personal interaction with music, especially in this time of transformation and uncertainty.

You can access these FREE/ READY- TO-USE materials at wsma.users.member suite.com by logging in to the portal with your account username and password. If you are logged in and a WMEA member, hover over the ‘person’ icon near the cart at the top of the home page and click on

Each year’s materials were originally developed around a theme to give unity to the project. However, you can now pick and choose compositions from many composers, styles and eras to meet your curriculum needs and your personal music preferences.

What Do Lessons Include? Each composition unit

identifies the

National Core Music Standards/WMEA WI Standards used in the lesson. There is information given about the style of the composition, the timbres used, the large and small forms used, suggested lesson outcomes, strategies to reach each out- come, composer biographical information, other composition specifics, plus forma- tive and summative assessments. The lessons also include information on the solo instruments used if applicable. Some lessons have instrument play-a-longs for students, visuals to help teach form, and YouTube links to excellent performances of the composition. Some of the com- positions also have suggested children’s literature options listed to help teachers

find children’s books to augment/enhance the lesson. There are charts, suggested quizzes, listening maps, creative writing project ideas and visuals to help you teach.

Teachers will find the suggested strategies in each unit easy to use and easy to tailor to their own teaching style. The strategies are mini lesson plans to help you reach the outcomes and the suggested assessments. The strategies provide lesson plan ideas that involve playing, moving, reading, listening, composing, limited singing and improvisation. Also included are listening maps, movement suggestions, guided listening activities, creative writing ideas, creative drawing ideas, perception charts, tapping pages, creative classroom instrumental accompaniments, suggested library books and a number of YouTube resources to enhance the lesson.

Students are taught to identify instru- ments by name, picture and family. The next step is to identify them by sound and historically when they were added to the orchestra. When students understand this, they know the approximate time period of any given composition even if it is their first exposure to it. There are also appen- dices with additional information linked to the lessons.

Recognition for Teachers With 25 Years of Service

• Were you a first-year teacher in 1996 or prior to 1996? • Have you taught for 25 years (or more)? • Have you been an NAfME member for at least 10 of those years?

If the answer is yes to all of these questions and we haven’t previously honored you, then now is the time. WMEA is planning to recognize teachers with 25 or more years of service in Wisconsin State Music Conference materials and the September issue of Wisconsin School Musician.

Simply complete the 25 Years of Service form at https://wmeamusic.org/awards/ 25-years-of-service. Submissions must be received by June 1, 2021.
