Advocacy Committee News

Marcy Russell,

Current Advocacy Chair and Randal Swiggum, Outgoing Advocacy Chair

As we recap this past year, 2026 WMEA Capitol Conversations (a signature ad- vocacy event) achieved a high level of participation with 34 legislative meetings involving 39 advocates, generating mean- ingful conversations about music educa- tion, school funding, and student needs. As we look toward 2026-27, our commit- tee will continue to support the WMEA Advocacy Assistance process, work with and learn from advocacy leaders across the country, and prepare advocacy-focused

resources and professional learning op- portunities for educators. Together, these efforts continue to demonstrate WMEA’s ongoing commitment to equipping educa- tors with the knowledge, relationships, and tools needed to effectively advocate for high-quality music education throughout Wisconsin.

At the June 2026 NAfME National Assem- bly in Reston, Va., and Washington, D.C., Wisconsin representatives participated in national advocacy discussions, met with ev- ery member of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation or their staff, and shared insights on Wisconsin’s unique political landscape. President Randal Swiggum was a speaker at the NAfME Advocacy Leadership Institute and represented Wisconsin’s perspective on the complexities of doing this work within current state and national bipartisan culture complexities. This fall, we welcome WMEA President-Elect Marcy Russell as the new chair and look forward to our

direction with her leadership.

Comprehensive Musicianship Through

Performance Committee News

Chris Gleason, CMP Committee Chair

The Wisconsin Comprehensive Musi- cianship Through Performance (CMP) Committee continues to build momentum as we prepare to celebrate the project’s 50th

Anniversary. This past year saw two highly successful professional learning opportunities, with both the Winter and Summer CMP Workshops held at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education. Planning is now well underway for a year- long celebration honoring five decades of CMP’s impact on music education across Wisconsin and beyond.

Throughout the coming year, readers can look forward to a series of special CMP articles in Wisconsin School Musician, video testimonials from educators whose teaching has been transformed by CMP, and a commemorative video featuring historic footage and exclusive interviews with influential leaders in the project’s history. These initiatives will culminate in a special 50th Anniversary celebration during next summer’s CMP Workshop, recognizing the enduring legacy of one of Wisconsin’s most influential contributions to music education.

WMEA Board and Council gather at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education during a summer meeting.
