tri-m music honor society

December: Music hallway holiday deco- rating and Christmas carols at a local nurs- ing home. Our chapter also pairs with NHS (It’s a lot of the same kids) for ringing the bell at a Salvation Army collection bucket.

January: College 101. We invite recent GHS graduates to talk to current students about their first year of college. This is held the same night as our alumni pep band night.

February: Music hallway decorating for Valentine’s Day. Two days of homeroom time for Karaoke that we call “Valentunes.”

March: Tri-M is a driving force behind our celebration of Music In Our Schools Month. The Tri-M students make locker decorations for every school musician in grades 6–9 and for high school teachers who were in band or choir as students. We also do concerts for the school during our homeroom period featuring these groups: concert band, choir, a cappella and pep band.

April: This month, band and choir both have big fundraisers, which include an auction. Tri-M donates three hours of yard work by at least four students to each event. They usually bring a nice amount of money, and more than four students show

up. I purchased it once and got 20 yards of mulch laid down in four hours.

May: New officers are elected. The music hallway is decorated with posters of the seniors. Our last event is Music Fest. It is an event for all musicians in grades 8–12. It is many of the same events as Friendsgiving, with the addition of a hamburger meal and school tours for the eighth graders who will soon be high school students. We also have awards for the students who exceed in service hours, and se- niors can earn pink music cords to wear at graduation.

There are additional service opportuni- ties offered by helping at elementary and middle school concerts. This includes stage crew and ensuring students are in the right place. Members also help in our PAC for all kinds of events. Tri-M is also a great resource for those times when you need a few students to get a job done.

One of the biggest benefits of Tri-M is how you can use the group to benefit your own school. If you would like more information on starting a chapter or would like to share

how you use Tri-M at your school, please complete this online form.

If you have questions about what we do in Germantown, or would like help to get a chapter started, please do not hesitate to contact me at jbell@gsdwi.org.
