Navigating the Inclusive Arts Education Padlet

Julie Palkowski, WMEA State Chair, Disability and Accessibility

Another exciting school year is upon us! The return of fall brings not only new educational adventures but also the wonder- ful opportunity to reconnect with our young musicians,

artists and colleagues. As you prepare your classrooms and curriculum for the months ahead, shifting focus toward universally accessible spaces can set a powerful foun- dation for student success.

To support your planning, this article outlines actionable tips and digital tools curated specifically for the inclusive arts

classroom. Many of these strategies were developed during our recent Adaptive Arts session recordings, hosted by my art educa- tion colleague, Sue Loesl, and me. You can access the specific recorded sessions below for a deeper dive into each topic:

• Tips to Start the School Year • Building Classroom Relationships • Arts Resources for Success • Adaptive Arts Reflections

Exploring the “Inclusive Arts Education” Padlet Through the preparation and facilitation of these sessions, we curated an online Padlet that is designed with the arts educator in mind. The Inclusive Arts Education Padlet serves as a living repository of instructional

Mailing List Rental Opt Out

WSMA and WMEA occasionally receive requests for single-use, direct marketing mailing lists. Only first and last names and respective mailing addresses are listed. If you wish to opt out of inclusion in mailing list rentals, log in to Engage (bit.ly/WSMAEngage), and navigate to “My Profile” > “Communication Preferences.”

strategies tailored for diverse learners. To help you navigate the platform, the dash- board is organized into six areas. Here are the highlights of what you will find in each section:

1. Questions from the Field

This section hosts the recording links for our four-part, collaborative Adaptive Arts Series. These sessions were co-led by Sue Loesl (WAEA art in special education chair) and myself (WMEA disability and accessibility chair), addressing real-world questions and accommodations submitted by educators on the ground.

2. UDL in Practice

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) removes barriers to learning. This column highlights practical applications of UDL, ranging from school-wide structural ap- proaches to specific pedagogical frame- works – such as implementing UDL within a middle school orchestra ensemble.

3. Student Stories

Inclusion is presented through the stories of impact. Here, several inspiring videos demonstrate how adaptive strategies and intentional environments pave the way for student success by building learner confi- dence, skills and creativity.
