Particle Characterisation
Celebrating 50 years of laser diffraction
Microtrac, a pioneering company in Laser Diffraction technology, marks its 50th anniversary since its inception in 1974. The company’s legacy began with the delivery of the first instrument to measure Particle Size Distributions using Laser Diffraction, a technology based on the foundational work of great physicists such as Albert Einstein.
Over the years, Microtrac has introduced groundbreaking technologies, such as the first laser diffraction measurement in dry powder which was patented in 1975, and the use of solid-state laser diodes in 1987. The company has continuously integrated the latest technological advances into its instruments, delivering unmatched information on size and shape to users.
In 2018, Microtrac released the SYNC analyser, which incorporated synchronous measurement of laser diffraction and dynamic image analysis. This innovation allows users to obtain comprehensive data on particle characteristics, further solidifying Microtrac’s position as a leader in the field.

Advanced Solutions for Particle Size and Shape Analysis
HORIBA offers a broad portfolio of solutions for measuring the size and shape of particles in a variety of products and manufacturing processes. A top of the range optical system combined with an unmatched smart and compact design make HORIBA’s instruments the most reliable and precise particle characterisation analyser range available. They provide the full power of laser diffraction within simple- to-use and easy-to-maintain solutions for analysis of a wide range of materials.
Partica LA-350 is a powerful tool in Quality Control with the smallest footprint, yet delivering the same accuracy as bulky and more expensive instruments. Its compact size means the LA-350 can be transported and used virtually anywhere.
For more in-depth particle analysis, Partica LA-960 provides a comprehensive solution with a wide measuring range (10 nm – 5,000 μm), offering a variety of accessories for analysing powders, paste and viscous solutions without increasing the instrument footprint. HORIBA’s brand-new Imaging Unit Accessory allows the direct observation of suspended particles, measuring their shape and providing useful data for their characterisation. This imaging tool is essential for the optimisation of advanced product and industrial processes design.
HORIBA’s solutions include nanoparticle analysis with the nanoPartica SZ-100, enabling the measurement of the smallest sizes down to 0.3 nm. A simple setup and user-friendly interface facilitate measurement of size and stability of formulation dispersion (zeta potential measurement) within seconds. The SZ-100 is an essential tool in any formulation and biomedical laboratory, indispensable for the analysis of proteins, nanoparticles and advanced materials such as quantum dots and carbon nanotubes.

ilmt.co/PL/QqDx Compliance software and validation services for precision particle sizing
Testa Analytical has launched a new 21CFR Part 11 compliance software designed for its NanoBrook particle sizing and zeta potential instrumentation. Particle size and zeta potential determination are crucial quality control measures, especially in regulated sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry. The compliance software ensures adherence to 21CFR Part 11 guidelines, offering password-protected roles for lab personnel, activity logging, and data integrity maintenance to prevent manipulation.
This user-friendly software provides detailed documentation of processes, methods, operator activities, and instrument validation, making it a valuable tool for labs prioritising result reliability. However, compliance software alone isn’t enough to meet regulations; regular performance validation is essential. Testa Analytical Solutions offers a comprehensive portfolio of validation services, including IQ/OQ/PQ (and, if required, MQ), ensuring NanoBrook instruments comply with 21 CFR 11 regulations.

Air sizer for the most effi cient particle sizing in the micron range
The Air Sizer 200 from Endecotts has been designed for sieving very fine dry particles, which require efficient dispersion and deagglomeration via air jet technology (e.g. difficult to sieve particles like electrostatic material). It is also the perfect instrument to quickly provide a sieve cut of powdered materials.
Most sieving operations on the Air Sizer take only a matter of minutes. Useful functions including the ability to regulate the level of vacuum, and constant or timed operation help to achieve optimum performance. The Air Sizer 200 is easy to use, extremely efficient and provides accurate and reproducible results.
The device features advanced air jet technology for fine particles, suitable for dry material of 20 µm and larger. It comes with digital controls for easy and reliable operation, offering extremely efficient and fast sieving times. The sieving action keeps apertures clear, and the air flow fluidises and helps to separate samples. The adjustable nozzle speed ranges from 5 to 55 rpm. Additionally, a pre-filter unit and vacuum cleaner are available as accessories. It is ideal for fine electrostatic powders, maintenance-free, and voltage-independent, making it suitable for 8” premium air-jet sieves.
The Air Sizer 200 is recommended for use with either the 8” (203mm) or 200mm sieves which are available in an extensive range of aperture sizes to ASTM E11 and ISO 3310-1 standard.
Endecotts supplies adaptors and lids with the Air Sizer 200 for both sizes of sieves. More information online:
