24 Compact and flexible peptide synthesiser

Vapourtec has recently launched its Peptide-ExplorerLT, designed for chemists aiming to explore and optimise linear peptide synthesis. This new system maintains the high-quality peptide production of Vapourtec’s Peptide-Explorer, launched in 2020, but features a more compact design and comes at a lower price point.

Dr Manuel Nuño, Vapourtec’s CSO, explained: “Peptide chemists can now enjoy all the benefits of Fast Flow Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (FF-SPPS) at a price comparable to traditional, automated batch synthesisers.

“Setting up a synthesis is straightforward. Enter the resin amount and loading, add the alphabetic amino acid sequence, and the software generates the optimised reaction protocol. This includes optimised methods for amino acids prone to racemisation and cyclisation.

“The Peptide-ExplorerLT is limited to linear peptides and does not support automated side chain addition through solvent change and Mtt (4-Methyltrityl) group deprotection.

“However, the Peptide-ExplorerLT can be upgraded to the Peptide-Explorer or Peptide-Scaleup with additional modules and a software license.

“One of the key benefits is the reduced space required. The system dimensions are 107 cm wide x 54 cm deep x 109 cm high, including space for solvent containers and waste,” added Dr Nuño.

The Peptide-ExplorerLT offers three reactor sizes with maximum working volumes of 4 ml, 9.5 ml, and 21 ml, supporting synthesis scales from 0.05 to 1.0 mmol. It also features modern, touch-screen software with a sequence generator and real-time in-line analytic data presentation.

LED photoreactor for larger batch reactions

Uniqsis presents the Solstice Maxi™, a cutting-edge LED photoreactor designed to accommodate twelve 20ml cm3 septum-sealed reactor tubes in a jacketed, multi-position tube holder. Engineered for scientists aiming to scale up batch photochemistry reactions, the Solstice Maxi™ seamlessly integrates with a standard laboratory magnetic stirrer, ensuring efficient stirring of each tube’s contents.

Maintaining photochemical reactions at a fixed temperature is effortless with the Solstice Maxi™. By connecting it to a recirculating liquid coolant, precise temperature control (10 – 60ºC) is achieved. While a piped water supply is an option, enhanced temperature control is guaranteed through connection to a recirculating heat exchanger.

With the insertion of a Borealis high-power LED lamp unit (365nm, 385nm, 425nm, 440nm, 460nm or 525nm), positioned at the centre of the Solstice Maxi™, the system transforms into a versatile, temperature-controlled, multi-position photoreactor. An embedded temperature sensor measures the LED back-plate temperature, ensuring automatic detection and configuration of LED wavelength and electrical parameters when connected to the matching ‘smart’ power supply. For precise control over photochemical reactions, the power supply enables LED intensity variation in 5% increments from 10-100%.

The Solstice Maxi™ is powered by a digital power supply unit, offering remote control and displaying both the internal reactor and LED backplate temperatures. Although primarily designed as a batch photoreactor, the Solstice Maxi™ can be adapted for continuous flow processing by combining the lamps with a Uniqsis Cold Coil and internal coil reactor, adding further versatility to this advanced device.

Making RTIL research easier with non-contact viscometry

A number of Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) are occupying the attention of researchers worldwide thanks to their intrinsic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and negligible vapour pressure, which together make them exceedingly attractive solvent candidates for electrochemical applications. Engineering the chemical structure of RTILs to enhance their application-relevant physicochemical properties is a major endeavour, requiring the testing of viscosity and moisture content as part of the process. Measuring the viscosity of RTILs often requires a method that maintains a certain gaseous atmosphere (e.g. argon-saturated), and prevents the introduction of moisture into the sample, and this is achievable with KEM’s EMS-1000S Viscometer because it uses sample tubes that can be hermetically sealed.

The EMS-1000S calculates viscosity after quantifying the rotational dynamics of a sample-immersed spherical probe spun using Lorentz forces. This means non-contact measurement is achievable, preventing cross-contamination. What’s more, the measurement method enables low-volume measurement (minimum: 90μL) and sample reuse. The instrument’s heating/cooling system quickly and stably controls sample temperature to between 0 and 200°C, and it comes with convenient measurement protocols for temperature, concentration and shear-rate dependence of viscosity studies. It has a wide measurement range of 0.1 to 1,000,000 mPa·s (cP),

measuring with high accuracy and repeatability, even at super-low viscosities. With a successful history of satisfying the viscosity and moisture analysis needs of prominent electrochemistry labs, KEM is confident that they can help you too. Contact them today to find out how.
