Automated CO2 incubators for advanced cell therapy production
To support the future implementation of workflow automation in cell therapy production, Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the Heracell VIOS 250i AxD CO2 Incubators. These incubators are designed for integration into automated and modular laboratories. The VIOS family of incubators is known for providing optimal
cell growth conditions and minimising contamination risks. The new addition of patent-pending automated door control allows the Heracell VIOS AxD CO2 incubator to open automatically when integrated into a centralised lab automation platform. This feature facilitates vessel loading and unloading through robotic control, supporting continuous cell therapy production processes.
Emerging cell therapy manufacturers, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies focused on bringing advanced therapies to market seek to automate the production of cultured cells without compromising quality. The innovative design of the Heracell VIOS Incubator modernises cell therapy production while maintaining stringent contamination control features.
“Human handling and complex processes limit the broad availability of cutting-edge cell therapies to treat cancer, autoimmunity, and orphan diseases. Automation could play a vital role in producing therapies in a more economical and safer fashion,” said Douglas Wernerspach, Senior Business Director and General Manager
for CO2 Growth, Protection, and Separation products. “Very few automation solutions available on the market allow for multiple large sample vessels in various laboratory workflows. This novel CO2 Incubator brings our customers closer to a fully automated lab.”
The Heracell VIOS 250i AxD CO2 Incubators are the most advanced incubators in the VIOS portfolio. With excellent cell culturing conditions that help ensure critical quality attributes of cells, Heracell VIOS 250i AxD CO2 incubators support emerging automated cell therapy production processes on a large scale. This advancement helps improve human health by supporting the cell manufacturing process within cell and gene therapies.
Features include in-chamber HEPA filtration, which captures all particles regardless of size, protecting cultures from airborne contaminants that can enter any incubator when the door is opened. The active airflow system ensures homogeneous culturing conditions throughout the incubator chamber, while the Steri-Run™ Cycle, which is independently proven to reach a 12-log sterility assurance level, eliminates more than one million biological indicators for both dry heat sterilisation and autoclave sterilisation in half the lethal time used in production models.

High-end circulators for challenging temperature applications
With the MAGIO series, Julabo is expanding its product portfolio of high-end bridge mounted circulators, refrigerated and heating circulators - naturally all in the usual premium quality. The circulators operate in a working temperature range from -50°C to +300°C and with a heating capacity of up to 3 kW. Excellent heating/cooling performance guarantees very short heat-up and cool-down times.
With an extremely powerful pressure/suction pump with performance values up to 31 l/min or 0.92 bar (pressure) and -0.4 bar (suction), the MAGIO series offers the strongest pump in its class and is therefore perfectly suited for challenging external temperature tasks. To ensure maximum resistance against chemical substances, all wetted parts are made from stainless steel.
Modern interfaces make easy remote control and practical data management possible as well as allowing integration into process structures. All MAGIO units come with integrated Pt100 connection, USB interface, RS232 and Ethernet. Analog interfaces are optionally available as accessories. Upon customer request, JULABO can equip any refrigerated and heating circulators of the MAGIO series with the OPC UA communication interface.
OPC UA stands for ‘Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture’ and is a standardised communication standard between machines (M2M) or between machines and higher-level systems. The open interface standard is independent of the machine or application manufacturer and is one of the most important communication standards for Industry 4.0 and the IoT.
In order to speak a common ‘language’, so-called ‘companion specifications’ are constantly being developed and published for a wide variety of unit types. This means that the data to be exchanged in an industry (e.g. laboratory devices) is standardised and all information is thus made available in the same form across all units and manufacturers. The specifications are developed in cooperation between the OPC Foundation, various professional associations (e.g. SPECTARIS for optics, photonics, analysis and medical technology) and machine manufacturers.

Stackable chilling incubators for life science applications
The EchoTherm™ Stackable/Programmable Vibration-Free Chilling Incubators from Torrey Pines Scientific are specifically designed for protein crystallography and various life science applications.
These incubators are 27-litre capacity and utilise Peltier-based technology for efficient heating and chilling. Distinguished by their absence of compressors or CFCs, coupled with a vibration-free design, they prove to be the ideal solution for protein crystallisations. Additionally, these incubators find utility in a range of applications, including incubating marine samples below room temperature, facilitating enzyme reactions and deactivations, supporting hybridisations, ligations, storing oocytes, and catering to general lab incubations. For enhanced versatility, up to three units can be stacked using two stacker accessories Model IN30-300.
The IN35 model stands out as a fully programmable unit, capable of storing three programs in memory. It features precise temperature ramping both up and down, with temperatures adjustable from 4.0ºC to 70.0ºC, controllable to ± 0.1°C, and boasting an accuracy of ± 0.2ºC. The incubators are equipped with an RS232 I/O port for remote control and data collection, a digital timer in hours, minutes, and seconds, complete with user-settable Auto-Off, and audible alarms to ensure seamless operation. The chamber size measures 12” high by 10” deep by 14” wide and comes with two stainless steel racks with room for four.
These units are shipped with universal power supplies, catering to worldwide usage on local line voltages. The package includes an AC line cord suitable for the country of use, a user manual, and a comprehensive 12-month warranty. Compliance with UL, CSA, and CE standards underscores the commitment to quality and safety.
