15 PFAS Testing & Analysis Dual-phase cartridges for streamlined PFAS testing
Waters Corporation announces the release of Oasis WAX/GCB and GCB/WAX PFAS Analysis Cartridges, designed to simplify and expedite sample preparation for EPA 1633 testing. These cartridges are engineered for analysing PFAS concentrations in non-potable water, soils, biosolids, and tissue. The innovative design reduces sample preparation time by 20% and cuts sample processing time by approximately 30 minutes per batch, enhancing efficiency and saving time and money for busy laboratories.
To ensure accuracy and confidence in test results, the Oasis cartridges are QC-tested by an accredited laboratory for low residual PFAS, reducing the need for troubleshooting contamination issues. Erin Chambers, Vice President of Consumables and Lab Automation at Waters Corporation, stated: “The new Oasis WAX/ GCB and GCB/WAX Cartridges simplify and expedite complex sample preparations, replacing a laborious two-step process and significantly reducing preparation and processing time.”
The cartridges integrate two clean-up steps required by EPA Method 1633: a Weak Anion-Exchange (WAX) cartridge and dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) graphitized carbon black (GCB). This combination makes the cartridges faster and easier to use than traditional methods, eliminating manual steps such as weighing loose GCB, shaking, centrifugation, and filtration.
Amanda Cronin, PFAS Laboratory Supervisor at Katahdin Analytical Services and a beta tester for the cartridges, praised their efficiency, stating: “These cartridges save time and maintain laboratory cleanliness by eliminating the loose carbon step. The time savings is key for us, making the Waters cartridges our choice for efficiency.”
Oasis WAX/GCB and GCB/WAX Cartridges are the latest additions to Waters’ PFAS Testing Solutions portfolio, supporting the growing demand for PFAS environmental testing. In 2023, PFAS chemicals led to over $11 billion in legal settlements, and major regulations are expected this year under CERCLA and the Safe Drinking Water Act. Accurate PFAS testing is increasingly critical for compliance across various industries.
Waters Oasis WAX/GCB and GCB/WAX Cartridges meet all EPA Method 1633 requirements for aqueous and solid samples and are available in packs of 30 and 300 cartridges. More information online:

Tackling PFAS analysis with combustion ion chromatography
‘Forever chemicals’ are a class of nearly 10,000 compounds including per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) and other perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). The accumulation of PFASs in the environment leads to their presence in the food chain, especially for long-chain compounds such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, or ‘C8’) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). The sheer amount of forever chemicals increases by the year, and little information is known about how most of these compounds affect humans and the environment. These substances are a challenge to monitor individually and quantify in low concentrations, even in drinking water. Expensive analytical instrumentation and experience is required to determine a small selection of individual PFASs, and such analyses are time-consuming and difficult to validate.
A large fraction of synthetic organofluorine substances is covered by the sum of all adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF) in waters. Non-targeted screening of AOF with combustion ion chromatography (CIC) is faster, easier, and a more robust alternative.
Combustion Ion Chromatography from Metrohm is flexible, straightforward, fast and reliable method for PFAS analysis. The company’s instrumentation covers a wide scope of applications and complies with international norms and standards.

PFAS methods can now be developed quickly, virtually, and at a fraction of the cost using the Pro EZLC chromatogram modeller. The new 58-compound PFAS library covers most major methods, and this easy-to-use yet powerful tool allows analysts to simulate method conditions and model changes before ever setting foot in the lab. Simply input your compound list to instantly generate an instrument-ready set of conditions. You can further refine the initial model to meet specific method requirements by changing the column phase and dimensions, mobile phase, and other optimisation parameters. No experimental input is needed because EZLC models are based on robust algorithms and experimental data already generated by Restek’s scientists. Speed up PFAS method development significantly with highly accurate liquid chromatography simulations from Restek’s Pro EZLC chromatogram modeller. Drugs of abuse and nitrosamine libraries are also available and other compound classes are coming soon.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are receiving considerable attention because of their widespread presence, the environmental and health risks they pose. Recognising the importance of accurate and efficient PFAS measurement, GL Sciences has created a comprehensive PFAS Testing Solution Guide to assist in PFAS analysis and monitoring.
Beside the application on liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and solid-phase extraction for ionic PFAS analysis, has also introduced a revolutionary sampler for collecting neutral air-borne PFAS. In addition, new technologies that involve gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) are offered.
This guide describes best practices by which contamination can be prevented when using sample preparation products, this being a crucial aspect of PFAS analysis. As a company at the forefront of technological innovation, GL Sciences also discuss in the guide new trends and advancements in PFAS measurement technology.
In publishing this guide, the goal is to contribute to the effective monitoring and control of PFAS contamination by assisting analysts in their work. GL Sciences firmly believes that taking such a proactive approach to PFAS analysis is essential to safeguarding the environment and public health.
