30 Repeatability and accuracy in fl owmeter performance

The rising demand for precise fl ow measurement has led to increased emphasis on the accuracy of fl ow meters, spurred by factors like stringent regulations and the need for precision in critical applications. Companies like Titan Enterprises continuously invest in research and development to introduce innovations that enhance the accuracy and performance of their fl ow measuring instruments. These innovations encompass improved sensor technology, advanced signal processing algorithms, and enhanced calibration methods.

Titan Enterprises’ commitment to research and development involves evaluating the performance of their fl owmeters and implementing improvements in product design and materials to enhance both accuracy and repeatability (reliability) of these devices.

Repeatability and accuracy are distinct parameters used to characterise the performance and quality of a fl owmeter.

Repeatability refers to the fl owmeter’s ability to produce the same result on repeated runs under identical operating conditions. It is a crucial aspect, and without excellent repeatability, a fl owmeter cannot exhibit good performance. Titan Enterprises ensures repeatability by setting calibration rigs to record a certain number of pulses, maintaining pre-set limits, usually set at 0.1% of repeated points. Repeatability is expressed as a ± percentage.

Accuracy, on the other hand, relates to the quality of the measurement device and how closely a measured reading aligns with the true fl ow. It is often described qualitatively, with linearity and uncertainty measurements offering quantitative terms to defi ne accuracy. Linearity, expressed as the maximum deviation of the reading over a specifi ed fl ow range (e.g., ±1% of fl ow rate), is crucial for the fl ow meter to remain within specifi ed limits over its entire fl ow range.

Measurement uncertainty quantifi es the potential error in calibration, representing the range of values within which the true values lie with a specifi ed probability. Despite inherent margins of error, top calibration houses achieve measurement uncertainties as low as ±0.02%, ensuring precision in fl ow rate measurement.

Accurate fl ow rate measurement is infl uenced by various variables, including pressure, temperature, density, and viscosity of the fl uid. Calibration records encompass these factors, with the best calibration houses claiming excellent measurement uncertainty control.

The trend towards higher-accuracy fl ow meters is expected to persist as industries evolve, driven by regulatory requirements and the continuous pursuit of process optimisation, effi ciency gains, and improved product quality across diverse sectors.

Starlab International, a Hamburg-based laboratory product manufacturer, is enhancing laboratory effi ciency with the introduction of new models to its ErgoOne E multi-channel pipette series. The latest ErgoOne E multi-channel pipettes, featuring 8 and 12 channels with a volume range of 50 – 1250 µl, expand Starlab’s product range to facilitate precise and effi cient pipetting in laboratories worldwide. The ErgoOne E series now comprises fi ve models, covering volumes from 0.5 to 1250 µl in either 8 or 12 channels. Klaus Ambos, Managing Director of Starlab International GmbH, emphasises the company’s commitment to optimising laboratory work processes and simplifying scientists’ daily tasks.

The ErgoOne E multi-channel pipettes stand out for their high accuracy, user-friendliness, and ergonomic design, meeting the needs of laboratory employees. Capable of precise dosages with volumes up to 1250 µl, these pipettes streamline the pipetting process, resulting in increased effi ciency and productivity in laboratories. The new models were developed in response to the requests of researchers and laboratory specialists, particularly for dispensing larger quantities simultaneously, such as when fi lling microtiter plates.

The ErgoOne E models, designed to alleviate repetitive pipetting tasks, offer four operating modes: pipetting, reverse pipetting, mixing, and dispensing. The intuitive menu navigation, low weight, and ergonomic design ensure ease of use, even during extended periods. Users can easily defi ne and record settings such as sample volume and speed of aspiration and delivery, promoting consistent pipetting techniques across different users. The individually adjustable fi nger grip allows optimal adaptation to user needs, ensuring longevity and reliability in demanding laboratory conditions. The long-life battery supports charging during use, while Starlab recommends TipOne tips for optimal precision and accuracy, coupled with regular calibration using the Starlab pipette service.

The new ErgoOne E models, priced attractively at £897.74 for the 8-channel model and £1,047.91 for the 12-channel model, offer a cost-effective solution for laboratories of all sizes. These models are available now, reinforcing Starlab’s commitment to advancing laboratory technology.
