16 WATER / WASTEWATER New compact pressure transmitter for pressure and level applications

With the Optibar PM 3050, Krohne has introduced a new, compact pressure transmitter for pressure and level applications with 2-wire 4…20mA HART communication. It aims at general applications in the water and wastewater, food and beverage, iron and steel, OEM/automation and other process industries. Typical applications include absolute and gauge pressure measurement of gases, vapours and liquids, hydrostatic level measurement in open tanks, pressure monitoring in pipelines, dry-run protection of pumps or compressor monitoring.

Optibar PM 3050 is a cost-efficient device fitting between Krohne’s ultra compact pressure transmitters and the high-end process series Optibar 5060. It features a robust and fully welded stainless steel design with a metallic diaphragm and is available with a variety of (hygienic) front flush or recessed threaded and flange process connections starting at DN25/ 1”. Available approvals include 3A, FDA, EHEDG, EG 1935/2004 and ATEX / IECEx Ex ia.

Optibar PM 3050 can be used for process temperatures up to -40...150°C / -40...302°F without additional diaphragm seal. For aggressive media and/or higher temperatures, it can be combined with Opribar DSP series diaphragm seal assemblies, providing a wide range of special materials as well as a temperature decoupling up to 400°C / 752°F.

The measuring range reaches from 0.1…100 bar / 1.45…1450 psi, with a smallest measuring range of 100mbar / 1.45 psi and a measuring accuracy up to ±0.1% of set span. It offers high overload factors especially for small measuring ranges, and a quick step response time < 80 ms.

Internally located push buttons allow for easily setting the offset correction, zero point and measuring range for a quick start-up. Alternatively, an optional LCD display offers convenient commissioning and setup of all configuration parameters via 4 push buttons. The 2-wire device comes with 4...20 mA output and HART 7.5 communication.

Following a competitive tendering process, the UK’s Environment Agency has awarded OTT Hydrometry with a national contract to supply submersible pressure sensors to be used in water level measurement applications associated with surface water, groundwater and tidal water monitoring.

The contract is part of a joint procurement exercise with SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and NRW (Natural Resources Wales)

The contract applies to Lot 6 of a telemetry and control equipment tender, which covers digital output ceramic diaphragm sensors with SDI:12 and Modbus output, for use where sensors require regular cleaning or where surrounding water is susceptible to freezing during the winter.

Under the contract, OTT will supply the OTT PLS sensors until November 2022, with options to extend for a further two periods of 12 months thereafter. The PLS is a robust ceramic pressure cell, providing long-term measurement stability. Resistant to physical force

(5 x burst pressure) and with an enclosure made of high-quality saltwater resistant steel, the PLS is suited to a wide variety of freshwater and marine applications.

As a vented probe, the PLS maintains measurement accuracy by automatically compensating for changes in barometric pressure, and a built-in microcontroller compensates for temperature effects. The sensor also applies correction values for gravitational acceleration and water density. The sensor’s robust cable has a Kevlar core, and with flexible output formats, it can be connected to a wide variety of dataloggers and outstations.

The ultra-compact PICO2 is a high-precision fibre-optic oxygen meter featuring the proven Redflash technology from PyroScience GmbH, standing for high precision and reliability with low power consumption and rapid response times.

The PICO2 can be used with a variety of optical oxygen sensors for measurements in aqueous samples and in the gas phase. The sensors comprise robust probes, dipping probes and contactless sensors like oxygen sensor spots (for measurements through 20 mm thick windows), respiration vials, flow-through cells and our oxygen nanoprobes for microfluidic applications.

PICO2 is also available as OEM version, characterised by ultra-low power consumption and offering automatic temperature compensation of the oxygen measurements. The OEM module PICO-O2 comes with a standard UART interface for easy integration into custom electronics. PyroScience also offers a pressure stable optical connector for underwater solutions. This connector can be used to retrofit existing underwater equipment since its thread is compatible to the most popular deep-sea connectors.

In addition, PyroScience offers OEM modules in the same size and shape for pH and optical temperature sensors. Combining all these modules broadens the application range of PyroScience sensor for applications in water- and wastewater-treatment, aquaculture, marine research and environmental monitoring.
