10 Gas Detection New Generation Smart Gas Detector
Kimessa, a Swiss gas detection manufacturer, are pleased to announce their new ‘Smart’ Ex Gas Detector (ATEX & IECEx) for a wide range of combustible or toxic gases. Ex certifi ed for IR, Catalytic, Electrochemical and Semiconductor sensors, featuring a built-in Zener barrier for the Ex ia toxic gas version. Low range toxic gas sensors may be incorporated to monitor for PH3,HCHO, BR2, Hbr, F2, H2
O2 , SO3 , etc Outputs include analogue 0-20mA, 4-20mA, digital CAN-BUS or Modbus RTU with optional relays (3). 24Vdc as standard with optional in-built power supply (85-265VAC).
The digital CAN BUS output option facilitates interfacing the Smart detector to the Kimessa CM gas monitor expandable for use with up to 128 detectors. Touch Screen displays with data logging, relays cards and the Kimessa web server for online monitoring, may also be added to the CAN BUS network, offering a comprehensive data suite to the client. Replacement sensors are pre-calibrated and easily replaced in the fi eld. An intuitive menu on the OLED display facilitates non-intrusive calibration via Hall Effect sensors and a magnet. Michael Baumann, technical manager at Kimessa outlines the key benefi ts of the new Smart Ex detector.

New Detectors in Single-Supply Operation with High Sensitivity
The InfraTec GmbH Infrarotsensorik und Messtechnik company from Dresden (Germany) has over 20 years of experience in manufacturing pyroelectric infrared detectors. Since 2014 new detectors LMM-274 and LIM-272 complete the product line with integrated CMOS preamplifi er technology. In contrast to conventional equipment, the detectors with JFET source tracking capabilities can operate in current mode and provide, for example, great advantages regarding the time response behaviour. Due to the very high signal voltage – up to several 100 mV – they can easily be coupled with a microcontroller.
The power consumption of these two single-supply detectors is about ten times lower than of our standard detectors: 80 µW for the LIM-272 and 160 µW for the LMM-274 at 2.7 V. Therefore, they are ideal for battery powered portable analyzers. The thermal compensation of these detectors ensures stable operation even under severe temperature fl uctuations.
The LIM-272 comes with two channels so that you can use a measurement channel and a reference channel and can be used to identify alcohol or chlorinated hydrocarbons, for example.
With the LMM-274, InfraTec now offers a low-power detector with four channels, so that three gases can be measured simultaneously and a reference channel is also available.

Crowcon (UK) is sponsoring the ‘Trail by Fire’ scientifi c expedition to the volcanoes of the South American Andes with the loan of Gas-Pro portable gas detectors. The expedition is funded by the 2015 Land Rover Bursary, run by the Royal Geographical Society (IBG) on behalf of Land Rover, and is the fi rst to attempt a large-scale estimate of volatile gases expelled by active volcanoes along 2500 miles of the South American Andes.

A Gas Sensor for Every Instrument
The extreme conditions mean that personal gas detectors are a critical part of the expedition’s equipment. Crowcon portable Gas-Pro diffusion detectors are being used to monitor and alert team members to unsafe levels of carbon dioxide (CO2
), hydrogen sulphide (H2 monoxide (CO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2
S), carbon ). The
detectors also monitor average exposure levels to protect members from the risks of longer- term exposure at lower levels of the target gases. On-board data-logging, performed by the Gas-Pro detectors, provides the expedition team with an additional source of data.
During the initial stages of the Trail by Fire, the Gas-Pro detectors played a major role in the team’s ascents of the Ubinas, Sabancaya, El Misti, Ticsani and Tutupaca volcanoes, in addition to being used for protection in hydrothermal areas.
