Water/Wastewater 31 Environmental Data Logging in Remote Scottish Locations

Over 60 Senator+ datalogging systems from HWM (UK) are currently being used to collect, collate and transmit data about various environmental conditions in some of the remotest areas of Scotland, where traditional telecoms are unavailable or impractical. Reservoir levels, compensation channel levels and flows, and pipeline flow rates from treatment works to compensation returns all need to be monitored, but they can often be located in hard to access and non-GSM covered places. The Senator+, developed by HWM in conjunction with satellite communication specialist Wireless Innovation Ltd., is purposely designed for just such situations.

Where there is no infrastructure for more traditional telemetry services – no GSM/SMS signal, too remote for PSTN lines – the Senator+ is able to use its MicroSAT satellite data transmission technology and solar-charged battery power to provide reliable and maintenance-free datalogging services. Scottish Water has been using the product extensively to retrieve important environmental monitoring information remotely: many of the installations can only be reached by various combinations of all-terrain four-wheel- drive vehicles, quad bikes and even hiking.

Fortunately, after the initial installation (easy with the all-in-one cabinet), the units are self-sustaining, and no subsequent maintenance has been needed or undertaken. Significantly, until now this monitoring was effectively impossible – requiring time-consuming and costly manual site visits for each individual reading at each location. Now, the satellite system transmits recorded data as often as every 5 minutes, straight to the user’s computing device of choice, wherever they may be. At the heart of the system is the Multi-Channel Senator+ data logger; each logger records from up to 9 separate inputs, can store up to 48,000 individual readings and has programmable alarm condition parameters. The unit is also available with more traditional cellular or PSTN communication options.

Sludge Level Measurement for Welsh Water

Levelogger Proven to be Worth its Weight in Gold

Pulsar Process Measurement (UK) have supplied a Sludge Finder 2 sludge level measurement system as part of Welsh Water’s Talybont-on-Usk treatment works develop- ments, providing accurate measurement that allows optimisation of sludge thickness and the production of a consistent solids content within the final sludge perfect for onward pumping and processing.

As often happens with instrumentation installations, the Sludge Finder is a small but vital component in a much larger project. In this case the 70 MLD treatment works was supplied with a new DAF (dissolved air flotation) treatment process that leads on to a new sludge treatment facility where the Pulsar unit was sited. The sludge treatment plant features two picket fence thickeners treating the sludge from the DAF process plus dirty water from two other areas of the works. Polyelectrolyte is dosed into the feed to aid settlement and the final sludge is removed from the thickeners using positive displace- ment pumps.

Sludge Finder 2 was selected and installed by Black and Veatch, who chose it on the basis of previous installations that had proven exceptionally reliable, giving them the confidence that Sludge Finder 2 would suc- cessfully handle the mixture of sludges from different processes that gave a variable composition going into the thickeners.

Pulsar are experts in acoustic technolo- gies, supplying ultrasonic level and flow measurement globally. Sludge Finder 2 operates on a similar principle, featuring Pulsar’s Viper self-cleaning transducer, which emits a sonar pulse that ‘bounces’ off the top of the sludge blanket. The key to the success of the Pulsar unit is its exceptionally sophis- ticated echo processing software that makes sense of the signal, possibly including numbers of competing and conflicting signals, to zero in on the accurate level. The Sludge Finder unit then gives a number of options of digital or analogue outputs for alarm or control. At Talybont, the on-site SCADA system is used to remotely control pump operation to maintain the pumped sludge dry solids content at an extremely consistent 4%.

Mandate to Deliver Quality

Since the Levelogger Gold was launched at the beginning of 2006, Solinst has shipped thousands and thousands of units to satisfied customers all over the world.

The Levelogger Gold is a self contained water level datalogger, which is completely designed, developed and manufactured in-house, in the tradition of all Solinst high quality products. The Levelogger Gold uses infra-red data transfer, providing the flexibility of installing by use of a simple wireline or by using a Direct Read Cable to surface. The Levelogger Gold includes a pressure transducer, temperature thermistor, 10 year lithium battery (based on 1 reading per minute), and internal datalogger with a capacity of 40,000 temperature and water level datapoints.

“Our mandate is to design and deliver high quality products, and back it up with our 3 Year Warranty, demonstrating the Solinst commitment to our customers.”

— Sarah Belshaw, President

Dependable Water Level Datalogger • Maintenance Free Design/Lifetime Calibration • 3 Year Warranty • Real-Time View • User-selectable Sampling Schedule • 10 Year Battery (1 reading/minute) • SDI-12 Compatible

High Quality Water Level Indicators

Designed with non-stretch, flexible tape, the Model 101 Water Level Indicator has permanent markings every mm (1/100 ft). The tape is available in lengths up to 1800 m (6000 ft), with an optional P6 Probe that can be submerged to 300 m (1000 ft) to measure total well depth. This durable instrument also features complete unit repairability.

TLC Meter Temperature, Level, Conductivity

A TLC provides accurate temperature and conductivity measurements on a convenient rotating LCD display. Water levels are taken from permanently marked flat-tape, every mm (1/100 ft) up to 100 m (300 ft). It is deal for temperature and conductivity profiling, and for a general indication of contamination levels and salinity.
