New Easy-to-Use ASTM Test Method for Measuring Soot Levels In Diesel Engine Lubricating Oils

Wilks Enterprise (USA) is pleased to announce that the InfraCal Soot Meter now gives users an approved ASTM testing method for measuring the percent level of soot in diesel engine lubricating oil. In late June, the ASTM issued Method D7686-2011 entitled “Test Method for Field-Based Condition Monitoring of Soot in In-Service Lubricants Using a Fixed-Filter Infrared (IR) instrument.”

With the InfraCal Soot Meter, rapid, on-site measurement of soot concentration levels in diesel engine oils at levels as high as 12 - 15% takes less than 30 seconds.

This compact, factory-calibrated pushbutton analyser provides direct readout of the percent of soot in diesel engine lubricating oils without sample preparation, dilution, or solvents and messy

transmission cells to clean.

Since the InfraCal Soot Meter was specifically designed for easy, on-site field testing, it represents a major time savings from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FT-IR methods that are impractical as field analysis methods. The Soot Meter is also significantly lower in cost and one step, pushbutton operation makes it easy to use with minimal operator training.

A rugged, no-moving parts design ensures years of virtually maintenance-free operation with the InfraCal Soot Meter. Weighing less than 5 lbs., it operates off 12 volt d.c. power for on-site field measurements. It is ideal for use at oil/engine testing laboratories, lubricant and additive manufacturers, and power generation stations, or for truck, bus, and off-highway equipment fleets.

The InfraCal Soot Meter is Ideal for use on all types of diesel lubricating oils and engines and gives users an ASTM approved test method.

New Generation of Portable Soil Moisture Measurement System

Campbell Scientific (UK) are pleased to announce the Hydrosense II portable soil moisture measurement system.

The new hand-held display unit features a 3” LCD display and four simple-to-use navigation buttons.

An integrated GPS geotags each reading and measurements can be grouped together

allowing average soil moisture to be calculated for a defined area. On-board data storage for up to 1500 measurements has been added, with Bluetooth connectivity for downloading to a PC.

The new soil moisture probe uses the same accurate measurement technique as the previous model, but features a redesigned housing to aid insertion into and removal from hard soils.

Noncontact Infrared Temperature Measurement System

(USA), a provider of infrared (IR) thermometry, has enhanced its MI3 Series infrared temperature measurement system with MI3 1M and MI3 2M high temperature sensing heads. The new sensing heads extend the MI3's performance for specific original equipment manufacturer (OEM) applications and high temperature manufacturing processes.

Raytek®

Designed to deliver industry-leading performance and flexibility at the lowest installed cost per measurement point, the Raytek MI3 Series represents a new generation of performance and innovation in noncontact temperature monitoring. These high-performance IR sensors reduce energy costs by allowing tighter process control and more efficient process heating. Improved control performance usually results in less product variation, higher product quality and increased throughput.

The MI3 1M and MI3 2M are rugged, IP65 (NEMA 4) stainless steel sensing heads with a separate communication module. They provide a 1µm and 1.6µm spectral response respectively, and offer a wide measurement range of 500°C to 1800°C (1µm) and 250°C to 1400°C (1.6µm). The sensing heads have a 120°C head ambient rating with 100:1 optical resolution and are available with standard laser sighting. These features, coupled with a fast 10msec response time, create a powerful temperature sensor for applications, such as silicon crystal growth, DSS polysilicon reactors, secondary metal processing, metal heat treating, and heat treating equipment OEMs.

The MI3MCOMM multichannel communication box provides all the functionality of the proven MI Series sensors with numerous new features. It supports up to four sensing heads in a convenient DIN-mountable package. All sensor-operating parameters are easily accessed and configured through the standard user interface with large backlit LCD display, or with the powerful Raytek DataTemp® multidrop software via a USB 2.0 digital interface. The innovative multiple sensing head interface of the MI3COMM communication box supports up to eight individually addressable heads when used with the accessory interface box.

The Raytek MI3 Series sensors offer a choice of scalable 0/4 to 20 mA and 0 to 5/10 VDC analog outputs, or Type J, K, R or S thermocouple outputs. With RS485, Modbus®

or Profibus network interface options, integration into existing control equipment or

OEM systems is seamless. Fully compatible with the Modbus and Profibus network protocols, the MI3 sensors can be used in a wide range of applications requiring digital communication for field devices. The updated thermometers offer a low-cost, multi-channel noncontact temperature measurement solution with network communications capability.

Standard USB 2.0 communication facilitates sensor configuration and is valuable for troubleshooting when the device is installed in hostile locations. Additionally, this capability saves maintenance time and minimises technician exposure to hazardous environments. Robust field calibration software also allows on-site calibration of sensors, which further reduces service time and expense.

Thanks to precision, high-resolution optics, the Raytek MI3 1M, MI3 2M sensors provide 100:1 optical resolution at a very attractive price. For high-volume OEM applications, the sensing heads allow a direct digital interface to the host machine controller.

The MI3's user-programmable, isolated alarm output is an easy way to achieve alarm and control redundancy or provide simple on/off control capabilities. Its optically isolated relay allows for local alarm capability, eliminating the need for separate limit switches or alarms.

Other standard MI3 features include: adjustable emissivity, transmissivity, peak hold, valley hold and signal averaging; as well as configurable inputs for emissivity control, ambient background compensation and trigger/hold input.

New Microwave Sample Preparation System

The all-new ETHOS One microwave digestion system from Milestone (Italy) is specifically designed for fast digestion or extraction of samples for AA and ICP. A wide selection of rotors is available, allowing processing of any kind of sample, from easily digested samples such as wastewater or sludge, to the most challenging, such as ceramics or refractory materials.

Vessels employ the Milestone patented vent and reseal technology with no loss of sample or volatiles that is experienced with other systems such as burst disk digesters and hot plates.

The ETHOS One is operated via a compact terminal with touch-screen display to provide simple, user-friendly control of the microwave sample preparation process with automatic, real-time monitoring and feedback-based control of multiple parameters.

Simply recall a factory-stored method or create a new one; press ‘START’ and the system will automatically follow the user defined temperature or pressure profile. Digestion runs are saved on the terminal and can be easily exported and printed to provide an important record as part of the sample handling reporting process.

The ETHOS One door opens downward enabling the chemist to use it as working platform and facilitate the loading of the vessels into the microwave cavity.

Each vessel is handled individually so the user does not have to directly introduce bulky and heavy carousels into the microwave unit.

The Milestone ETHOS One combines high-level technology with an unmatched ease of use. From the microwave hardware to the control terminal, from reaction sensors to the pressure vessels, everything is built to a high standard to allow the user to take full advantage of the system capabilities without the hassle of cumbersome operation, thus improving the overall sample preparation process productivity.
