Environmental Analysis 33 Razor-sharp, High Definition Thermal Imaging

The FLIR™ (France) SC660 thermal imaging camera offers superior thermal and visual image quality, spot size resolution and temperature measurement accuracy. It is ideal for all types of engineering, laboratory or field application that may benefit from thermal analysis. The SC660 infrared camera is a science-grade infrared camera with a host of advanced features. The SC660's high definition 640 x 480 pixel infrared detector delivers exceptional sensitivity, resolution and the image quality allowing it to measure even the most demanding applications. Proprietary FLIR Dynamic Detail Enhancement (DDE) technology further improves sharpness of thermal images. The SC660 also includes an integrated 3.2 megapixel digital video camera to aid in data presentation. Infrared and visual images can be stores in standard jpeg formats. A 5.6-inch widescreen LCD allows easy on-camera viewing of images. Using a FireWire interface the SC660 can transfer 14-bit radiometric data directly onto high capacity SD-cards or a PC for real-time analysis of captured images. The user can save a full 60 seconds of digital voice and embed it with each IR image allowing a full description of the target and measurement conditions to be recorded. In addition, data from the in-built GPS system can be used to exactly denote the camera's location at the time of making a reading. Drawing upon its long experience in thermal imaging - FLIR has included in the SC660 an abundance of features that enhance its ease of use, productivity and safety of operation. The SC660's ergonomic magnesium housing is designed for rugged portability and meets the IP54 standard, thereby protecting internal parts from shock, vibration, dust and water splash. The SC660 can run up to 3 hours on a single fully charged battery. Included with the SC660 is ThermaCAM®

Revolutionary New System that Automates Oil and Grease Analysis

The SPE-XPress from Environmental Express (USA) system is designed for the extraction and evaporation required by EPA Method 1664 for Oil and Grease Analysis.

Simply load the 3-station SPE-XPress with standard one-litre sampling jars and walk away. The system flushes itself clean, prepares the extraction disk, then filters and extracts the sample through sodium sulphate with n-Hexane. In the final stage the SPE-Xpress automatically transfers the extract to a pre-weighed aluminum pan where it is evaporated to dryness. Remove the pan for final weighing and the process is complete. User-friendly PC software controls the functionality while recording data for downloading to LIMS. The system

is self contained so does not require placement under a fume hood.

SPE-Express both extracts your sample and evaporates the n-Hexane and utilises a fluid sensor to verify that the sample vessel is empty. It will reduce time and labour in your lab, improve accuracy plus minimise analyst contact with hazardous chemicals.

There are better ways to spend your time

than watching paint dry …or watching solvent dry in an environmental analysis laboratory, come to that.

New Digital Temperature Sensor Launched

Following the successful market launch of the SHT2x family of humidity and temperature sensors, Sensirion (Switzerland) is now launching a sensor designed exclusively for temperature measurement. The new STS21 temperature sensor is based on the same chip as the SHT2x family and is housed in a tiny DFN package measuring only 3x3 mm. This makes the sensor ideal for use in applications where only very limited space is available. It also delivers outstanding performance and remarkably high accuracy of ±0.22°C over the temperature range of 5 to 60°C, combined with very low power consumption – an especially important consideration for battery-operated devices.

The STS21 is pin and protocol compatible with Sensirion’s standard SHT21 humidity sensor, but it has a different I2C address. This allows the STS21 to be used as alternative to the SHT21 in applications where temperature measurement is required and humidity measurement is optional, since the same hardware can be used with both sensors.

The STS21 temperature sensor is fully calibrated, provides a digital output, and is very competitively priced. It therefore fulfills the stringent requirements of many applications in terms of both performance and cost effectiveness.

What if you could automate analyte recovery to the extent that checking solvent status was a thing of the past, while recovery (particularly of volatiles) was significantly increased? Your procedures would be much more cost-effective and your results dramatically improved – and highly reproducible.

The EZ-2 from Genevac, world leaders in solvent evaporation, offers it all right now, including specially developed methods for many environmental

New Sample Dividers

A faultless and comparable analysis is closely linked to accurate sample handling. Only a sample representative of the initial material can provide meaningful analysis results.

This can be achieved by using a rotating sample divider, such as Retsch’s (Germany) new PT 100. It divides the sample so exactly that the composition of each of the 6, 8 or 10 fractions corresponds exactly to that of the original bulk sample.

This applies both for fine-powdered and coarse materials up to 10 mm feed size. The material feed and dividing processes take place automatically and without loss of material.

The new rotary tube divider PT 200 allows for the representative, dust-free division and reduction of larger volumes of bulk goods. The ratio of the fractions is freely adjustable. Both dividers feature digital time setting and comfortable quick-release clamps.
