Water/Wastewater New In-Situ Particle Counter for Water Analysis

The PC-2200 from the Spectrex Corporation (USA), In-Situ Particle Counter, is a unique and easy-to-use instrument designed to permit thorough inspection of liquids without consuming the sample. It is ideal when critically clean liquids are needed. A laser beam permits observation of small particles by near-forward light scatter. In addition, a scanning and detection system is provided to automatically quantify the number of small particles in one cc (milliliter) of the contained liquid.

A specially designed fixture, the “V” Block, automatically holds in correct alignment any standard 150mL beaker or calibration standard. The spring automatically pushes the bottle up into the “V” position. It is easily removed (by unscrewing two 6/32 screws) for small vial or flow-thru cell attachment.

The Model PC-2200 Particle Counter provides all of the facilities needed for rapid inspection of bottled and flowing liquids. Small particulate matter is automatically quantified by a scanning laser beam and the results presented on a digital display. A minimum size selector is provided for this quantification measurement and is normally set to 1µm.

Spectrex Corporation also offers a portable version of the Particle Counter, the PC-2300. Reader Reply Card No. 29

Measuring Bromate Photometrically, a Simple Method for Reliable Results

New Handheld Product Line for the Measurement of Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen and pH

YSI (USA), a Xylem brand, announces the introduction of the YSI EcoSense®

pH100A, DO200A and EC300A

instruments for the accurate measurement of conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, TDS (total dissolved solids), dissolved oxygen, BOD, pH, mV and temperature for the lab or field in environmental and wastewater applications. The company showcased its range of YSI EcoSense products in booth during WEFTEC 2011 in Los Angeles, USA.

Water treatment methods are routinely used to ensure a safe drinking water supply. However, these processes can sometimes lead to unwanted side reactions that introduce compounds, such as bromate, into the water.

As a method for measuring bromate, ion chromatography has successfully been used, but it has some disadvantages. These include the high cost of the equipment and the complex procedure used to measure bromate. Co-elution of bromate with for example chloride can occur and this leads to interferences of the analysis. To circumvent this problem, special separation techniques can be used, such as a high-capacity anion exchanger or sample pretreatment.

Merck Millipore (Germany) has developed a method using photometry to measure bromate. The method is based on the reaction of 3,3'-Dimethylnaphtidin with iodide and bromate to produce a red radical cation, whose absorbance is determined photometrically.

The more bromate contained in the sample, the more intense the color at the end of the reaction time. Ion chromatography and photometry methods were compared using known standards as well as test samples. Measurements showed good agreement with the standards and with each other. The simplicity and low cost of using photometry make it a very desirable method for measuring bromate.

Using classical photometry, a calibration curve must first be done in order to determine the concentration of bromate in the unknown sample. Using a Merck Millipore Spectroquant® Pharo spectrophotometer, you can completely avoid the time consuming step of preparing a calibration curve.

The Spectroquant® instruments are pre-programmed with a

calibration curve for accurate determination of bromate levels in your sample from 0.003 – 0.120 mg/l.

The sample preparation and bromate analysis is described in a detailed application note from Merck Millipore. The sample is first concentrated for increased sensitivity, then mixed with reagents as specified in the application note. Sample is then incubated for 30 minutes to allow color development followed by bromate measurement using a Spectroquant® Pharo spectrophotometer.

YSI, the newest member of the family’s handhelds replace the original EcoSense pH100, DO200 and EC300 handhelds. The new EcoSense line with added features and benefits provides accurate data in an affordable format utilising YSI sensor technology.

The pH100A measures pH, mV and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP-67 waterproof case. Additional features include; internal buffer recognition (US or NIST buffer sets), a low battery indicator with a 1000 hour battery life, a 50 data set memory and 1- and 4-meter cable options.

The DO200A measures dissolved oxygen (% saturation and mg/L), BOD and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP-67 waterproof case. Additional features include:a low battery indicator with a 500 hour battery life, manual salinity and pressure compensation, screw on cap membranes with low stirring and fast response and 4- and 10-meter cable options.

The EC300A measures conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, TDS (total dissolved solids) and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP- 67 waterproof case. Additional features include; as with the DO200A there are 4- and 10-meter cable options, a low battery indicator with a 500 hour battery life and a super-stable, four-electrode conductivity cell designed for field durability.

Robust Test Rod for Electro-acoustic Water Leak Detection Outdoors

The AquaTest T10 from Sewerin (Germany) is an electro acoustic listening stick / test rod with innovative technology and ergonomic design for the location of leaks in water dirtibution networks. The AquaTest T10 is designed for single handed use with the reciver and microphone combined in one unit. The headphones are activated not by the usual push button but by a new sensor area, simply place your finger in this area and the T10’s headphones are activated take your finger away they are deactivated. The noises that are picked up are visualised on a display incorporated in the handle. The SDR radio module means the test rod can be used with radio headphones with the result that there are no cables to get in your way.
