Water/Wastewater
Actuators at the Centre of One of the UK’s Most Successful Environmental Regeneration Schemes
The Cardiff Bay Barrage is a highly sophisticated environmental protection mechanism designed to regulate the water level in the 500 acre fresh water Cardiff Bay and to isolate it from the sea by preventing the ingress of sea water.
For over a decade, since the barrage was first completed, the enormous butterfly valves in the underground pipework network that controls the environmental protection process have been reliably operated by Rotork (UK) IQ actuators. The pipework design comprises of a man-made sump in front of the locks on the bay side of the barrage which leads down to a 1200mm pipe installed beneath the barrage in order to return to the sea the salt water introduced to the bay by lock activity.
The IQ actuator on the main pipe valve is fitted with a current position transmitter to enable the valve to be opened at percentage increments in order to control the flow of salt water from the sump. The configuration of the three other actuated valves in the network can be altered to fill either or both of the locks or transfer water between them.
The actuated valves are remotely operated from the Salt Water Panel in the Barrage Control Room. Data from floating analysers in the bay assist in gauging the level of salt water in the sump, enabling the operators to open the valves as required and divert the salt water into the appropriate destinations.
Cardiff Bay is now a recreational and environmental asset; the frequency of actuator operation fluctuates from season to season and from day to day. In busy periods there can be over 150 boat movements through the locks during a weekend. Meanwhile the actuator on the main inlet control valve is constantly in operation throughout the year.
In an adjacent area of the barrage a fishpass is installed; designed to assist the ongoing scientific study of fish health in a changing environment, the fishpass is equipped with six Rotork IQ actuators to control various penstocks and screens leading to different areas of the installation, depending on tidal conditions.
The actuators operate penstocks to allow fish in and out of a fishtrap, where they are examined by the Environment Agency. An additional IQ actuator operates a screen that prevents debris from travelling through the fishpass.
The operation of the fishpass actuators is controlled by a SCADA system in the Barrage Control Room, which is backed up by a motor control centre in the unlikely event of a fault.
The actuated valves are remotely operated from the Salt Water Panel in the Barrage Control Room. Data from floating analysers in the bay assist in gauging the level of salt water in the sump, enabling the operators to open the valves as required and divert the salt water into the appropriate destinations.

New Handheld Product Line for the Measurement of Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen and pH
Xylem (USA), announces the introduction of the YSI EcoSense® pH100A, DO200A and EC300A instruments for the accurate measurement of conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, TDS (total dissolved solids), dissolved oxygen, BOD, pH, mV and temperature for the lab or field in environmental and wastewater applications. Xylem showcased its range of YSI EcoSense products in booth during WEFTEC 2011 from in Los Angeles, USA.
YSI, the newest member of the Xylem handhelds replace the original EcoSense pH100, DO200 and EC300 handhelds. The new EcoSense line with added features and benefits provides accurate data in an affordable format utilising YSI sensor technology.
The pH100A measures pH, mV and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP-67 waterproof case. Additional features include; internal buffer recognition (US or NIST buffer sets), a low battery indicator with a 1000 hour battery life, a 50 data set memory and 1- and 4-meter cable options.
The DO200A measures dissolved oxygen (% saturation and mg/L), BOD and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP-67 waterproof case. Additional features include:a low battery indicator with a 500 hour battery life, manual salinity and pressure compensation, screw on cap membranes with low stirring and fast response and 4- and 10-meter cable options.
The EC300A measures conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, TDS (total dissolved solids) and temperature featuring an easy-to-use interface, one-hand operation and IP-67 waterproof case. Additional features include; as with the DO200A there are 4- and 10-meter cable options, a low battery indicator with a 500 hour battery life and a super-stable, four-electrode conductivity cell designed for field durability.

New Long Term Deployment Water Quality Instrument From Aquaread
Aquaread is proud to announce the latest addition to their range of water quality testing probes: the AP-7000. Specifically designed from the ground up for long term deployment, this new probe features extensive use of environmentally safe anti-fouling components and coatings in conjunction with a unique dual wiper mechanism.
Aquaread sponsor Just a Drop
The combination of anti-fouling and self-cleaning ensures the AP-7000 can be left in-situ for long periods without the need for regular cleaning or maintenance, and can be relied upon to take consistently accurate readings.
The AP-7000 is fitted with Optical DO, pH, ORP, EC, Depth and Temperature electrodes as standard. In addition, there are a further six multi-function electrode sockets into which any combination of a large range of Aquaread ISE or Optical electrodes may be fitted. All electrodes, including EC, are kept clean by the dual wiper system.
Readings can be displayed in real- time on an Aquaread GPS Aquameter, transmitted in real-time using the Aquaread Telemetric System or collected in-situ over a long period using an Aquaread Logger.
As an option, the AP-7000 can be supplied with additional SDI-12 and Modbus (RS-485) outputs to allow direct connection to a wide range of third-party logging and telemetry equipment. This option facilitates direct replacement of existing probes made by other manufacturers.
With six standard and twelve optional electrodes, anti-fouling, self-cleaning and an optional heavy-duty flow- through cell, the AP-7000 is the most comprehensive and highly specified multiparameter probe available today.
