Mercury Levels in Soil – New Environmental Reference Materials

The Game Changer in Microwave Digestion

Milestone’s (Italy) unique Single Reaction Chamber (SRC) technology overcomes the limitations of traditional microwave sample preparation.

At the heart of the system is a large sample chamber that is pre-pressurised with inert gas and heated with microwave energy. The chamber serves both as a microwave cavity and a reaction vessel. Employing the same SRC technology as the UltraCLAVE, the UltraWAVE offers the same great benefits, but in a smaller benchtop instrument, making it accessible to every lab.

With higher performance, higher sample throughput, improved workflow, plus lower labour and consumables costs when compared with conventional closed vessel systems, the UltraWAVE is transforming microwave digestion.

And not only microwave digestion: its higher sample weight capability, greater digestion power, outstanding throughput and ease of operation means UltraWAVE can replace open vessel digestion, high pressure ashing and even block digestion in many applications.

Unlike closed vessel digestion, different sample matrices can be digested together, and the chamber is water cooled, which makes cool down time very fast.

LGC Standards (UK) expands its range of certified reference materials (CRMs) for environmental factors with the introduction of three new materials for mercury in soil.

One of the most significant contributors to mercury in the environment is from mining activities, driving specific requirements for environmental testing. To ensure test results are reliable and of the required quality, laboratories need high quality reference materials of appropriate mercury concentrations. This has led to an increase in the demand for CRMs for mercury in soil, where availability to date has been limited. To respond to this worldwide demand, the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) has now developed three new certified reference materials for mercury based on mineral and natural soil.

Manufactured under the CGL’s ISO 17025 accreditation and strictly following the requirements of ISO 30 - 35 guidelines, these three new CRMs for mercury in soil are now available from LGC Standards in 30g or 50g units.

State-of-the-Art Condenser Enhances Lyophilisation Results

Genevac (UK) announces the new SuperCool 75 - a state-of-the-art condenser that in conjunction with its HT-12 High Throughput Evaporator has been proven to set a new benchmark for enhanced evaporation and lyophilisation results.

Drying HPLC purification fractions, principally comprising water and acetonitrile, is a routine yet essential task in many laboratories. The requirement is to dry the samples to a powder form, such that samples can be accurately weighed, easily sub-sampled and redissolved. To provide a rapid, high-throughput alternative to freeze drying of such samples - Genevac developed its proprietary fast lyophilisation (LyoSpeed™) methodology for use on the HT-12 Evaporator. While the LyoSpeed™ has traditionally worked well for hydrophilic samples - difficulties may arise where the sample cannot dissolve in only water. In such situations, when the organic solvent is removed, the sample crashes out forming an oil which until now required further processing to achieve the desired dry powder form.

The SuperCool 75 chills to -75C and operates at higher power than any other commercially available condenser, opening the door to greatly improved results with the Genevac LyoSpeed fast lyophilisation process for HPLC fractions. Customer trials have shown that the Genevac HT-12 Evaporator / SuperCool 75 combination produces powdered lyophilisation samples using the LyoSpeed methodology from even the most difficult to handle samples with a success rate as high as 95%.

Four Channel Logger/Thermometer with Built-in SD Memory Card

The RDXL4SD is a portable Thermometer & Data Logger from Omega Engineering (UK) with built-in analysis functions. It can accept up-to 4 thermocouples from types J, K,

T, E, R and S or 2 Pt100 Ω 2-wire sensors. The data loggers have a back lit display, showing up to 4 Channels simultaneously and capable of sampling, processing and displaying measurements without being connected to a computer.

They include a real-time SD memory card data logger (1 to 16 GB capacity) built-in clock and calendar and real time data recorder. Auto sampling time can be set from 1 to 3600 seconds and the user can also log data manually. These real-time data loggers save measured temperature data, along with the time information (year, month, date, minute, second) into the SD memory card. Data can be subsequently downloaded to Excel for analysis.
