22 Weather Monitoring Exclusive Aviation Weather Lidar Range Introduced
Leosphere (France), provider of Lidar technologies for atmospheric observations, recently announced its first dual range of products dedicated to the air traffic industry at the Meteorological Technology World Exhibit.
The WindCube200s is a new generation of long range scanning wind doppler lidar that addresses the landing and take off atmospheric related hazards : gust fronts, microbursts, windshears, wake vortices.
The R-Man510, a Raman Lidar Super Ceilometer, comes as an answer to volcanic ash threats at cruising altitudes. “Weather services and air traffic managers required new remote sensing techniques to take both safe and cost
effective decisions when the atmosphere holds unexpected hazards such as ash clouds coming from volcanic eruption, or wind shears in landing or take off areas” said Laurent Sauvage, Scientific Director for Leosphere. “Since the formation of our company, we have always believed that Lidars, a laser-radar able to see invisible

The UK’s Meteorological Monitoring System
The Met Office, providers of environmental, weather and climate services currently operate a network of manual, automatic and semi-automatic meteorological measuring and observing sites at more than 280 locations in the United Kingdom and a small number overseas, for real-time data acquisition.
CSE Servelec (UK) has provided an enterprise SCADA solution as the backbone of their Meteorological Monitoring System (MMS).
The MMS replaced several previous legacy systems and allows data from meteorological sensors to be gathered and stored at the Met Office headquarters in Exeter. The system enables the Met Office to carry out data processing and analysis centrally in a flexible and manageable way. The observations are fundamental to almost all the services the Met Office provides - as direct data and products; for initialising numerical weather prediction models; for verification of forecasts; as the basis for many weather/climate related consultancy services; and for providing evidence of climate change.
More frequent data sampling, additional data from existing sensors, or the addition of new sensors is made possible with the MMS. This versatile and scalable observing infrastructure allows operational and maintenance costs to be reduced, as well as technical risks. Data is delivered to a modularised central processing system enabling a more efficient management and support structure.
System inputs, such as radiation, air quality or hydrology can be fully integrated. The system is also dynamic and adaptable to customer needs, for example frequency and quality can be altered. The MMS is based on CSE Servelec's well-established Telemetry and SCADA application suite, SCOPE-X.
SCOPE-X implements a fully redundant duplicated real-time database seamlessly united to an Oracle long-term historic database and flexible data interfaces.
SCOPE is a family of products that meets current and future requirements for SCADA and Telemetry systems. SCOPE provides non-stop monitoring and utilises high levels of redundancy, reliability and robust software design to offer high availability and low maintenance requirements.
The real-time integration of data into management information systems allows users through the business to access data for making informed and independent decisions.

Weather Monitoring Specialist Achieves Best Year in its 27 Year History
Pessl Instruments (Austria) is continuing to expand its international presence with its largest single delivery to date for a single project. 900 iMETOS automatic weather stations were supplied for one project in China. This intelligent solution provides real time flood risk warning. Other projects also contributed to the 60% growth of Pessl Instruments in the 2010-11 financial year.
The China project in Henan was the starting point in which additional applications of iMetos stations were realised. The requirements of flood warning experts are very simple; all countries have hydrological networks of weather stations and water level monitoring spread out all over the country, but they suffer the same old problem; rains are getting heavier, dispersed and the distribution varies a lot within a few kilometres or miles!
It is impossible to give a 100% accurate forecast about amount and timing of precipitation, so ground measurement is important in providing a truer representation. Until now only very expensive solutions could overcome this pending problem. Now with the launch iMetos ECO “D2”, with rain gauge (and soil moisture/water level), real time communication coupled with high resolution rain monitoring, in near real time, and with very low investments and infrastructure needs, are available. This new technology allows installation of real time rain stations on a 2-3 km grid and gives extremely accurate information about strength and intensity of rainfall at any time in the palm of your hand. This low maintenance solution and low cost, but highly versatile system, is the ideal supplement to existing hydrological networks.
