New Data Loggers Improve User Experience
New ICP-OES Spectrometer Launched
PerkinElmer (USA) focused on the health and safety of people and the environment, announces the launch of its Optima™8x00 series of Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometers (ICP-OES).
The Optima 8x00 ICP-OES platform offers improved performance and reduced operating costs for analysis of environmental, food, product safety and geochemical samples. ICP-OES is a highly sensitive, rapid technique for determining the elemental composition of a wide variety of sample types.
“Whether the challenge is identifying and quantifying environmental contaminants, or determining the quality of pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical supplements, the new Optima 8x00 series is an ideal solution for today’s laboratories,” said Dusty Tenney, president, Analytical Sciences and Laboratory Services, PerkinElmer. “We are excited to launch the next generation of ICP-OES instruments, which will further improve productivity, sensitivity and cost of ownership to meet the diverse needs of today’s labs, worldwide.”
The Optima 8x00 series is designed for ease of use and exceptional throughput and detection limits, which helps maximize productivity and profitability of testing laboratories. Based on customer needs and real-world applications, the Optima 8x00 series has a number of new features that will enable laboratories to lower their cost per analysis and more easily meet the ever-changing regulatory requirements.
Grant Instruments (UK) , have introduced an enhanced SQ2020 series of high performance, portable data loggers with an improved fully configurable graphical LCD display and updated design.
The SQ2020 data loggers now include an intuitive and easy to read graphical LCD screen with clear and simple navigation system, fully configurable via the integrated four button keypad. The loggers can be remotely configured with no need to connect to a PC or Laptop. Logger status, setup or real time graphical data (meter mode) are easily viewed, giving accurate (better than 0.1%) and reliable results within minutes of switching on.
The SQ2020 handheld data loggers are designed for mobile data logging applications such as field research and external engineering projects e.g. environmental projects, service or commissioning systems or processes, in food manufacture and research and in all general engineering and manufacturing production projects.
Nathan Neal, sales and marketing director for Grant Instruments says: “With the addition of this large new LCD screen, users can access most of the Squirrel’s core functionality without the need for a PC connection. This makes data logging away from the office much simpler and more convenient for the user. Being able to see real-time data graphically plotted on the screen gives piece of mind that the sensors are correctly connected and fully operational – great for longer term unattended tests.”
The highly flexible, multi-purpose loggers have eight differential (or sixteen single ended) analogue input channels to measure current, voltage, resistance and temperature, and eight event inputs. All eight event inputs can either be logged or used as triggers to automatically start or stop logging.
The onboard memory can store up to 14 million readings as well as retain up to six separate logger configurations. Memory can be extended by using removable MMC/SD cards. The unit is able to fulfil many data logging needs, including more demanding applications requiring up to 100 readings per second on two channels (model SQ2020 2F8).
With multiple high specification 24-bit analogue-to-digital converters to facilitate concurrent sampling, four alarm/relay outputs the data loggers are an out-of-the-box solution for a wide range of data logging applications.
The new logger is powered from internal cells or an external power supply connection.
The onboard RS232 communications can be connected to a GSM modem and there is a choice between a wireless and an Ethernet port to facilitate system networking and the remote transmission of data. SquirrelView set-up and download software for a PC is provided as part of the system to enable users to export stored data to a chosen PC based application.
The Squirrel range is compatible with Grant’s comprehensive range of temperature probes and with commercially available sensors for measuring a variety of physical parameters.
Each data logger within the Squirrel range comes with a 3- year warranty. OEM versions of most products are available on request.

4th Generation of OPTIC™ Multimode Inlet for Gas Chromatography
After the worldwide success of three generations of OPTIC™ multimode inlet for gas chromatography (GC), ATAS GL International (Netherlands) has developed a new instrument, the OPTIC-4. Broadest range of capabilities of the previous generations is expanded with new features and solutions that cannot be found in any other GC inlet.
The patented low thermal mass design of the inlet body together with direct resistive heating provide fast linear temperature programming up to 600°C at rates as high as 60°C/s. In addition to standard sampling modes, the programmable inlet can operate effectively as Large
Volume Injection, Pyrolysis or Thermal Desorption sample introduction device. With the options for sub-ambient cooling, backflush, cryogenic trapping and automated liner exchange, OPTIC-4 is the world’s most versatile inlet for gas chromatography.
With the OPTIC-4, analyst can introduce into GC a wide range of samples including the ones containing high
matrix or thermally labile compounds. The samples can also be water based or solid. Automated solvent venting procedure based on the standard solvent sensor in the split line makes large volume injections as easy as the industry standard split or splitless.
The new OPTIC™ inlet is designed to be installed on any GC make. The inlet and its control are also compatible with most of the autosamplers available on the market.

Chromatography and Spectroscopy Catalogue Expanded by 50 Percent
Agilent Technologies, Inc. (USA) have introduced the 2011-2012 Essential Chromatography and Spectroscopy Catalogue. At 1,344 pages, the catalog is 50 percent larger than the previous edition. It is the first to include columns and other consumables from Agilent’s acquisition of Varian, Inc.
"This is our most comprehensive catalog ever, and anyone who does chromatography or spectroscopy will find it an indispensible source of products, compatibility charts, application notes, maintenance schedules and more," said Helen Stimson, Agilent vice president, Chemistries and Supplies Division.
In addition to Agilent J&W GC columns, ZORBAX LC columns and Poroshell LC columns, this edition contains details about Bond Elut solid phase extraction, Captiva Filtration, application-specific GC and LC columns, GPC/SEC gels and standards, flash chromatography products, and atomic and molecular spectroscopy supplies.

New Column for Superior Separation of Structurally Related Isomers
Dionex Corporation (USA) is pleased to introduce a new reversed-phase HPLC column, the Acclaim®
C30. This column
is suited to a broad range of separations including hydrophobic, long chain, structural isomers, lipids and hydrophilic analytes. The Acclaim C30 column provides unique selectivity and complements the range of other high- resolution reversed-phase Acclaim columns.
The Acclaim C30 column is based on covalent modification of high-purity, spherical, porous silica particles with a C30 alkyl chain and provides the following benefits; high shape selectivity, unique selectivity complementary to other reversed-phase columns and compatibility with highly aqueous mobile phase.
The Acclaim C30 columns are available in 3 µm and 5 µm particle size, 2.1, 3.0, and 4.6 mm i.d. in various lengths and are ideally suited for use on the UltiMate® UHPLC+ systems.
