Gas Detection 11 Infrared Gas Absorption Spectra

For many gases, the ability to absorb infrared radiation depends on the wavelengths of the radiation. In other words, their degree of transparency varies with wavelengths. There may be IR wavelengths where they are essentially opaque due to absorption. Physical property databanks exist containing infrared absorption data for many substances. To determine the infrared absorption spectrum for a gas - a sample is placed in an Infrared Spectrometer and the absorption (or transmission) of infrared radiation is measured at different wavelengths. The resultant absorption data are normally published as graphs (or spectra).

Gas Imaging Cameras take advantage of the absorbing nature of

certain gas molecules, to visualise them in their native environments. These cameras use a filter that restricts the camera to operating in a narrow spectral range where the gas to be detected has high absorption thereby selectively enhancing the detection (visualisation) of the gas leak.

Conclusion

FLIR gas imaging cameras were developed to provide preventative maintenance solutions that help spot leaks in tanks, pipelines and facilities. They have been proven worldwide to improve safety and profitability and minimise emissions thereby

reducing the risk of business interruptions. The FLIR GF-Series are capable of rapidly scanning large areas of piping, monitoring furnaces, heaters and boilers and detecting / visualising gases such as SF6 (Sulphur Hexafluoride) and 24 other harmful gases quickly, from a safe distance.

FLIR Systems is the world leader in the design and manufacturing of thermal imaging cameras for a wide range of applications.

Innovative Hybrid Gas Detector is ATEX & SIL2 (3) Approved

In the gas detection for tough environments, an innovative alternative which compares the signals received from two different sensors (Pel+IR) installed in a single head setting the improper alarms apart.

The Sensitron (Italy) SMART S-IR is an innovative concept in the gas detection for the Premium Safety market. The detector uses a hybrid technology sensor (Pel+IR) installed in a single head. The behaviour of the sensors is constantly monitored by a microprocessor and the and the incoming signals are compared in order to supply an output corresponding to the worst situation revealed in the shortest time: it guarantees the highest accuracy with false alarm conditions close to zero.

The other important features of the SMART S-IR are: a non-intrusive calibration; 3 wires 4-20mA output with a further two relays output and the HART communication module (optional).

The SMART S-SS and the SMART S-MS belong to the same family. The SMART S-MS is a double-head detector and two different sensors (Pel-IR; IR-IR; Pel-Electrochemical; Electrochemical-Pel) can be installed on it. It guarantees two different independent outputs and can be compared. The detectors are SIL 2(3) certified in compliance with EN50402/EN61508.

New Series of Gas Detection Alarm Controllers

Oldham (France) an Industrial Scientific company have introduced the WX Series of gas detection alarm controllers. The new product line consists of three controllers: WX4

(four-channel controller), the WX16 (16-channel controller) and the WX64 (64-channel controller).

The WX4 is designed for continuous monitoring of up to four analogue or digital gas measurements. Its optional wireless technology can receive and transmit gas readings wirelessly, providing substantial wiring cost savings and application flexibility.

The WX16, designed for the continuous monitoring of up to 16 analogue or digital gas measurements, comes standard with two RS-485 ports and can be configured to receive and transmit wirelessly. Other features include programmable relays, a backlit LCD screen and 24-hour data logging.

The WX64 is designed for the continuous monitoring of up to 64 analogue or digital gas measurements. It offers a rich set of features including a colour display, data logging via 2GB SD Card, zoning, dual RS-485 ports and programmable relays. The WX64 also has a convenient embedded Web page that enables remote viewing and configuration of all 64 channels via a standard Web browser.

In addition to the individual features, the WX Series controllers offer the convenience of communicating seamlessly with each other via their analogue, digital or wireless signals. This provides the flexibility to enable local area controllers to report their readings back to a primary alarm controller.

"The WX Series alarm controllers represent an exciting new offering from Oldham," says Tom Cunningham, President, Oldham. "The range of communication options and rich functionality offered by these controllers allows Oldham to better serve our expanding customer base around the world."

Benzene and Total Aromatic Compound Detection all-in-one Instrument

Ion Science (UK) introduces the new Tiger Select for the detection of both Benzene and Total Aromatic Compounds, in one hand-held instrument. Utilising the high output Ion Science 10.0 eV detection system a reading for Total Aromatic Compounds (TACs) is seen immediately on start-up. Should aromatics be detected, a Draeger benzene pre-filter tube can be easily attached to ensure rapid detection and selective measurement of benzene.

Throughout the measurement process, Tiger Select continues to display real-time data ensuring the final reading represents the full value of actual benzene present. Benzene concentrations are displayed down to ppb levels giving you the most accurate, reliable data you can count on.

Tiger Select is capable of providing 15 minute STELs and 8 hour TWAs for TACs. A 10.6 eV lamp can easily be installed for the detection of a wide range of TVOCs.

Tiger Select follows on from the successful launch of the PhoCheck Tiger VOC detector with a dynamic range of ppb to 20,000 ppm. The portfolio of instruments demonstrates the ability of Ion Science to continuously develop innovative gas detectors that surpass customer expectations. Target applications for Tiger Select include; TAC detection at loading docks and barge operations, confined space entry pre- screening during refinery and plant maintenance, refinery down-stream monitoring, hazardous material and marine spill response.
