Attend ASTM Meetings Express your Views!

ASTM International standards-development meetings are attended by a diverse group of industry representatives, including manufacturers, users, distributors, testing laboratories, academicians, consultants and government personnel. ASTM staff members are also present to provide any needed support or guidance related to ASTM policy. There is no charge to attend, and all are welcome. All attendees have a voice and are encouraged to participate in discussions.

In 2020, ASTM International also announced they are providing no-cost public access to a suite of more than two dozen standards used in the production and testing of personal protective equipment to combat the coronavirus public health emergency. For more information, visit www.astm.org/COVID-19.

PROPOSED STANDARD WILL AID PETROLEUM VISCOSITY MEASUREMENT

Standard would describe process for simultaneous measurement of kinematic and dynamic viscosity. ASTM International’s petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants committee (D02) is developing a proposed standard that will describe a procedure for simultaneously measuring the kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity, and density of liquid petroleum products and crude oils. According to ASTM member Niklas Christensson, the proposed standard

(WK92527) will be particularly suitable for laboratories with a moderate throughput of samples. “Laboratories that want a high degree of flexibility with regard to samples and measuring temperatures and for whom simple operations is important will benefit in particular,” says Christensson, managing director, Eralytics GmbH. “In addition to viscosity, density measurement is also covered, which will be of interest to some users.”

According to Christensson, the proposed method describes a method that takes a new path as the kinematic and dynamic viscosity is measured in a single step.

“This is novel because previous methods only support one of these two parameters,” notes Christensson. “The optional determination of the standard-compliant and highly accurate density in the same housing enables a variety of additional applications in the same procedure.” This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #6 on clean water and sanitation; #13 on climate action; and #14 on life below water.

Christensson invites interested parties to join the development WK92527, particularly laboratories that would participate in round robin tests to determine the procession data for different product groups.

NEW ASTM INITIATIVE TARGETS ELECTROLYZERS AND FUEL CELLS

The task group will drive water quality treatment standards and subcomponent test methods. ASTM’s hydrogen and fuel cells subcommittee (D03.14) and water committee (D19) are seeking participation in a new task group on hydrogen-based electrolyzers and fuel cells. The group’s goal is to develop at least three new standard specifications: one on water needed for electrolyzers, and two on test methods for evaluating properties of separators/solid electrolytes/membranes for use

in electrolyzers and fuel cells. Gary Ganzi, subchair for ASTM D19.08, and Christina Daniels, subchair for D03.14, are overseeing the effort. According to Ganzi, the group’s ongoing activity will provide key guidance and drive quality for these industries through a time of rapid technological change. “We believe the resulting work will be helpful to decision makers, developers, manufacturers, and end users, and ultimately accelerate improvements in product quality, reliability, cost, and applicability in this

vital technological field,” says Ganzi.

The task group is seeking experts worldwide in all phases of production and use of hydrogen, as well as experts in membranes, ion exchange, and water treatment. The task group’s first meeting will take place the week of Dec. 2, 2024. For more information, contact Brian Milewski (info below).
