THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCURATE ETHANOL TESTING & INTRODUCTION TO THE WI INSTRUMENTS MODEL E

Ethanol has emerged as a crucial renewable fuel source in the energy sector. It is blended with gasoline in varying concentrations, commonly E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) and even in higher blends such as E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). USA’s ASTM D4806, D5798, and D7794, Brazil’s ANP Resolution n° 19, EU’s prEN 15376 and others require that ethanol, water and methanol concentrations are measured for the ethanol product and in the fi nal product of fuel ethanol, denaturant concentration should also be measured. Hence, to ensure that ethanol used in the sector meets stringent quality, safety, and performance standards, comprehensive ethanol testing is essential.

Measuring ethanol for purity, water content, and the presence of contaminants is critical. Contaminants can cause corrosion of metal parts, swelling of some elastomers, reduce fuel effi ciency, and damage engines. Water can also cause phase separation in ethanol and gasoline blends, which can result in a layer that cannot combust and another lower octane number layer that causes knocking in the engine. Testing ethanol helps to maintain the integrity of the fuel supply and protects engine components from damage.

The Role of WI Instruments Model E in Ethanol Testing

WI Instruments (WI), a new brand under CFR Engines, provides precise testing solutions for the energy sector, particularly in fuel ethanol and ethanol testing. The company has developed Model E to meet the rigorous demands of ethanol production, fuel ethanol blending, storage and distribution by measuring quickly in real-time ethanol, denaturant, methanol, water, and isopropanol concentrations, and density.

The Model E has been deployed globally and tested in three different continents. Across the different samples, lab conditions and environments, it has been able to achieve the following testing results and accuracies of ethanol concentrations.

effi ciency, reducing the time and cost associated with ethanol testing. Due to our proprietary semiconductor technologies, a minimum sample volume of 3mL is suffi cient to perform measurement. Our IP also enables a robust and light design for minimal maintenance, further enhancing cost-effectiveness.

4. Real-Time Monitoring and Quality Control: WI solutions can enable real-time monitoring of ethanol and other components non-destructively during the fi nal production and blending processes, allowing for immediate adjustments and reducing the risk of contamination or substandard fuel from reaching the market.

5. Reduced Product Giveaway: With enhanced accuracy, WI solutions can provide blends even more fi nely to achieve more savings with reduced product giveaway.

WI Instruments Core Technologies

Our product is designed internally starting from the semiconductor chips all the way to the circuits, the mechanical parts and the algorithms.

Our hardware architecture supported by our own proprietary technologies means that no moving parts or fragile optics are needed; it was designed with robustness in mind. We take the instrument to the next generation of design, bringing the most advanced equipment to use in fabricating our hardware.

The CerebrumTM algorithm framework allows for different samples and their compositions to be learned

and calculated, while considering the different sample matrices and operating conditions. Furthermore, it can be catered to meet evolving requirements such as even new compounds to be quantifi ed.

The testing solutions provided by Model E offer several key benefi ts to ethanol players:

1. Enhanced Accuracy and Precision: The Model E is calibrated to detect ethanol and fuel ethanol across a huge range of concentrations and different matrices, ensuring that the chemicals meet the highest quality standards. This accuracy, boosted by our CerebrumTM algorithm, helps prevent engine damage, reduce emissions, and improve fuel effi ciency.

2. Compliance with Regulatory Standards: With a focus on compliance, WI testing solutions are aligned with international standards and regulations. Model E is in conformance with ASTM D5845, in compliance with ASTM D7777, and in correlation with ASTM D7923, D6839, D6730, D5501 and D4815. This ensures that ethanol / fuel ethanol producers and distributors can meet requirements and enhance their reputation for quality.

3. Cost-Effective and Effi cient: WI testing instruments are designed for ease of use and

Conclusion: Take on Challenges in Ethanol Testing with WI Model E

WI addresses the key challenges in ethanol testing, such as accuracy, simplicity and repeatability, with our innovative and accessible solutions. The instrument helps to ensure comprehensive quality control to meet the industry’s stringent quality and regulatory requirements.

Additionally, WI offers scalable solutions tailored to different market needs, from large-scale production facilities to smaller, decentralized producers, ensuring that high-quality ethanol and fuel ethanol is accessible to all sectors of the industry.

As the use of ethanol continues to grow globally, the importance of effective and effi cient testing methods, supported by innovative solutions from companies like WI, will only increase, ensuring that ethanol remains a viable and sustainable fuel option.
