Does it matter if distillation fl asks aren’t made from borosilicate glass?


There is a copious amount of glassware to be found in any laboratory and it can be found in a wide range of shapes and sizes.


In recent years many labs have switched from glass vessels to cheaper and less fragile plastic materials but, in most cases, due to the nature of the samples handled and with the precise tolerances or specifi cations written into international standards, this is not an option for the petroleum industry.


Many techniques such as distillation, chromatography, centrifugal and extraction, to name but a few, are performed over a range of conditions including signifi cant changes in temperature. Testing under these conditions affects the lifespan of glassware.


Borosilicate glass contains boron trioxide which allows for a low coeffi cient of thermal expansion, which means borosilicate glassware can withstand the more extreme temperature changes associated with petroleum testing. The durability of borosilicate and quartz has clear cost advantages and, over time, enables a better accuracy of results than other glass materials.

Teledyne CETAC Technologies haveintroduced a new automated sample preparation system to the market. This system is designed to automate the sample preparation process for environmental, mining, pharma, clinical and soil laboratories. The SimPrep utilises the industry standard ASX-560 or ASX-280 autosampler, both manufactured by Teledyne CETAC, and a high precision dual syringe pump with fl exible, simple software. Both the autosampler and syringe pump have proven to be robust, fast, accurate and precise solutions to laboratories worldwide.


“The SimPrep is a labour saving sample prep system for the complex to simple sample preparation found in today’s labs, which saves on the bottom line of the laboratory” says Gary Preister, Teledyne CETAC Business Development Manager. “We are very excited to release this solution to assist our customers in eliminating the manual sample preparation steps performed on a daily basis,” adds Preister.


The SimPrep does more than just mixing and dispensing; it can automatically create spikes,calibration cures from predefi ned dilution factors, serial dilutions, internal standard additions, 1-to-1 and 1-to-many sample transfers (splitting) and acidifi ed samples


SimPrep includes a wide range of syringes from 20µL (microliter) to 50mL (milliliter) and a single system can serve multiple techniques such as ICP-MS, ICP, AA, Colorimeter, IC and FIA.


Typically SimDist achieves homogenous dilutions of up to 2000x, carryover <0.01%. precision of 100% at <0.2%, accuracy 100% +/- 1% and linearity r2 = >0.999996 over a wide range.

OPTIC from GL Sciences is a highly advanced gas chromatograph multimode inlet system with sophisticated temperature and gas fl ow control that can be used for the most demanding GC analyses. OPTIC has a long history starting from 1992. The current version, OPTIC-4, can be used for hot, cold, large volume and on-column injections, in-liner derivatisation, thermal desorption, pyrolysis and much more. Dirty, solid or liquid samples can be analysed using Diffi cult Matrix Introduction (DMI) technique. With DMI, a sample is introduced into a small micro-vial placed inside an OPTIC liner. In addition, the OPTIC controller is capable of a Deans’ switch or fl ow modulator control. An optional cryogenic trap with the fast heating ramp rate is also a valuable feature. The patented low thermal mass design of the inlet body together with direct resistive heating provides fast linear temperature programming up to 600 °C at rates as high as 60 °C/sec.

With the OPTIC-4, an analyst can introduce into GC a wide range of samples including the ones containing matrix or thermally labile compounds. The samples can also be water based or solids. Automated solvent venting procedure based on the standard solvent sensor in the split line makes the large volume injections as easy as the industry standard split or splitless.
