Interactive Thin Film Selection Guide Chemplex®

has been deeply involved in developing thin-film sample supports since 1971. There are many aspects that are

considered in determining which thin film is proper choice for a particular application which include chemical resistance to sample attack, tensile strength and transmittance values. Resulting from our extensive experience in thin-film sample supports, we have created the following simple three-step approach to thin-film selection.

Chemical resistance: Select a thin-film based on its chemical resistance to the sample being analysed.

Percent transmittance: Determine the thin-film’s thickness resulting the highest percent transmittance values, or lowest x-ray absorption, at the analyte lines of interest.

has taken this simple three step approach and developed an interactive Windows application which will aid the user in filtering, sorting and selecting the best thin-film for their particular application. You can explore and compare the different thin-films and their percent transmittance at various energies.

Thin-film configuration: Choose a thin-film format that is most convenient for your application. Chemplex®

This exciting FREE Windows application can be found on the [Chemplex® website: http://www.chemplex.com/how-to-select-

thin-films. Simply download the .ZIP file, extract its contents and run the Setup.exe file. Contact us at: mailto:sales@chemplex.com today for more information at or visit our website: http://www.Chemplex.com.

46982pr@reply-direct.com Etnom: The Thin-Film of choice for Petrochemical Analysis

Spectroscopists, Chemists and Lab technicians have tough jobs performing elemental analysis on many different types of materials. One of the toughest materials is in the Petrochemical field. The crude oils, gasolines, diesel fuels contain aromatic and/or aliphatic hydrocarbons that tend to attack thin-film sample supports. This can be identified by thin-film sagging or bulging, slight leaking, to actually rupturing and loosing all of the contents of the sample cell, as might be experienced with Mylar®

Chemplex® from 1.5µm through 3.0µm with a companion product, Zythene® recognised this issue for the Petrochemical field and developed the Etnom® , with similar characteristics to Etnom® thin-film sample support. Etnom®

becomes more taught and the samples can be measured longer for more consistent results. Etnom® with a thickness of 6.0µm.

and Polypropylene. Additionally, the sagging of the thin-film leads to inconsistent

results. As the thin-film sags, it becomes closer to the detection system, thus artificially increasing the intensity. This is sometimes referred to as ‘Thin- Film Loading’.

has the unique property

that when exposed to these aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons not only does it resist it, but it gets stronger. There are no thin-film loading effects and the Etnom®
