Measurement and Testing 39 Smart Wireless Technology is Enables Reliable Control in Challenging Applications
Emerson Process Management's (UK) Smart Wireless technology is enabling flexible, cost-effective control in applications where implementing and maintaining a traditional wired network is too difficult or expensive.
"Besides gaining cost-effective insights by using Smart Wireless to monitor processes and equipment, users can now also exploit the advantages of this technology for better control of difficult applications," said Bob Karschnia, vice president of wireless for Emerson Process Management.
Major oil companies are also using Emerson's Smart Wireless for steam-injection control on more than 2300 remote wells that needed to be instrumented quickly to maximise field performance. Harsh environments including high ambient temperatures, sandstorms, no local power, and remote locations made traditional solutions unreliable, hard to maintain, or simply impractical. Emerson's reliable, easy-to-implement wireless technology provided a cost-effective way to overcome these challenges quickly and with fewer potential points of failure than wired solutions. The resulting improved control has also enabled the companies to avoid costly and inefficient over-steaming.
Wireless networks are inherently easier and more cost-effective to implement than traditional wired control solutions, as well as providing higher availability in tough applications. "The ease of adding measurements for control can save as much as 60 per cent on installation time," said Karschnia, "and the flexible architecture makes it easy to accommodate late design changes. There are also fewer components to install and maintain, and fewer potential points of failure."
Emerson's continuing improvements to Smart Wireless technology further strengthen the case for its wider use beyond monitoring and into the realm of challenging control applications. In addition to one second update rates and redundant gateways, Emerson’s offering includes the Rosemount®
702 wireless transmitter that now provides discrete output as well as input capabilities for wireless networks. An enhanced PID algorithm is also available in the DeltaV™ digital automation system for optimised closed-loop control.
Cyber security measures built into Smart Wireless technology have also recently been certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to meet the requirements of Federal Information Processing Standard 197 (FIPS-197), and by Wurldtech for Achilles™ Level 1 Certification giving customers even greater confidence that their wireless networks are safe and secure.

New Sensor for Detecting Petroleum Spills in the Subsurface
Dakota Technologies (USA) offers the UVOST®
, a direct-push delivered sensor that
allows rapid screening of most petroleum- based light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs). This tool uses laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology to immediately detect sub-surface contamination without having to draw samples or wait for lab results.
The UVOST responds exclusively to source term NAPL, free of interference from dissolved phase hydrocarbons, and it is ideal for detecting fuels, lubricants, and crude oils. The system is designed for use with all direct- push platforms such as Geoprobe® PowerProbe®
, AMS , and cone penetrometers.
When deployed, the UVOST’s probe uses ultra-violet laser light and a sapphire- windowed sensor to detect the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are found in petroleum LNAPL. As the probe is driven into the ground, the LNAPL’s fluorescence signal is sent through a fiber-optic cable to a detector and logged by a laptop computer, so results can be seen in real time, and on-site personnel can begin determining an ideal location for the next probing location. In a typical day 250 to 500 feet of continuous logging can be performed.
