18 Analytical Instrumentation Rheometer Now Features USB Connectivity

The DV-III™ Ultra Rheometer from Brookfield (USA) now features USB connectivity. Brookfield applications software, Rheocalc and Rheoloader, has been upgraded to recognise this new communications capability. Customers who already have a DV-III Ultra or DV-III+ Rheometer can arrange to have their instrument retrofitted with this new capability by contacting their local Brookfield dealer.

The DV-III Ultra combines the sophisticated features of a rheometer with the yield stress measurement capability of Brookfield’s YR-1 Yield Test Rheometer. This “all-in-one” tool is the most powerful and versatile value in the marketplace today allowing the operator to easily predict a material’s complete flow behavior.

In stand-alone mode the operator enters test parameters, temperature control requirements, starts the program and the results are displayed on the built-in display. The DV-III Ultra also provides built-in math models for data analysis.

Optional Rheocalc32™ Software lets the operator control all aspects of rheological testing directly from their computer. They can analyse data, generate multiple plot overlays, print tabular data, run math models and perform other time-saving routines. Data can be saved in the program or exported to Excel. Using optional vane spindles with DV-III Ultra, the operator can create test programs to measure yield behavior, performing true static yield tests.

New Technical Concept Saves Time, Money and the Environment

The new technical concept from Lovibond® Tintometer® (UK) is

already saving time, money and the environment. With PFXi instruments in full production, users are already benefiting from the capabilities of Remote Calibration and Management, via the internet (RCMSi).

Colour measurement instruments require regular servicing and checking with calibration standards, to ensure correct operation and continuous compliance to international standards; such as ISO 17025.

Historically, instruments were returned to qualified service centres, involving shipment costs and impact on the environment. Moreover, downtime incurs production loss or loan equipment is obtained; again impacting the environment and increasing costs.

RCMSi technology eliminates the need to return the instrument to a qualified service centre, by enabling users to calibrate the instrument on-site and at their plants, whilst still receiving an authoritative certificate of calibration from a UKAS / ISO certified facility. Measurements are taken in the field and communicated to a secure server at the Lovibond®

Tintometer® Automated Smoke Point Measurement

The smoke point method, in accordance with ASTM D 1322, IP 57, and ISO 3014, is one of the oldest test methods in the petroleum industry.

This test method provides an indication of the relative smoke producing properties of kerosines and aviation turbine fuels in a diffusion flame. The smoke point is related to the hydrocarbon type composition of such fuels. Generally, the more aromatic the fuel the smokier the flame. A high smoke point indicates a fuel of low smoke producing tendency.

It is one of the last manual methods that has never been automated. Running the smoke point test manually requires highly skilled technicians with years of experience. In addition, the manual test is time consuming.

The current visual rating method used for specification purposes suffers from the drawback of operator subjectivity. The visual measurement of an open flame is a very challenging exercise and very dangerous for lab personal. The visual rating of the flame varies from one operator to another.

The SP10, from AD Systems (France) revolutionises this test. This unique automated instrument uses a patented system (License TOTAL RM) based on a video camera that observes the flame instead of human eye. The flame image is digitalised and the dedicated software determines the height of the flame when its shape corresponds to the one described in the test method.

This specific flame is the one with the maximum height without smoke generation. Strictly following the standard test method, the instrument performs three determinations of the flame heights and reports the average value.

The result is saved in a built-in data base. It can be printed, transferred on a USB memory stick and/or send to a LIMS when the SP10 is connected to a LAN.

Every test is fully documented and traceable, which is important for aviation industry quality procedures. facility, where software remotely

monitors the calibration process. If the data passes within a defined tolerance of the master data on the server, a certificate of calibration is electronically provided to the user. The result is a fully calibrated instrument, traceable certificate of compliance, minimised cost and no impact on the environment.

introduces a new Criterion Water Bath System

The SP10 is an automated smoke point instrument that strictly follows the test method while eliminating the subjectivity inherent to the manual test and significantly improving repeatability and reproducibility. In addition, the SP10 eliminates all safety risks linked to the visual observation of an open flame. The test can run unattended which drastically reduces labor.

The SP10 is versatile instrument for routine applications at every location where quality of kerosenes and aviation turbine fuel is evaluated in accordance with test methods ASTM D 1322, IP 57, ISO 3014, and BS 2000-57 and its analogs. Benefits of smoke point automation will be appreciated by laboratory personal at refineries, pipelines and terminals, airports, military (field labs), research labs and third-party labs
