Collecting an Aveling Barford roller from Burton & South
Derbyshire College by Liz Greenwood, secretary of NSCTEC
n September 2019, the North Staffs and Cheshire Traction Engine Club were alerted that Burton and South Derbyshire College had an Aveling Barford DX8 Diesel Roller which they wished to rehome. Several Committee members went to view the vehicle, and it was decided that this was definitely a project the Club was interested in acquiring. Contact was made with the College expressing the Club’s interest. After several letters, emails and phone calls it was agreed that the roller’s new home should be with the Club, at their base in Draycott in the Clay. Agreements were drawn up and plans for its collection were made. The original plan was to collect the vehicle in the spring of 2020, but Coronavirus Lockdown scuppered that idea so a second date was arranged. At 07:30 on Saturday 26th September 2020, a class D5 Fowler road haulage engine number 15787 and a 5NHP Burrell Devonshire traction engine, number 2706 set off from Klondyke Mill, Draycott in the Clay, the headquarters of the North Staffordshire & Cheshire Traction Engine Club. They were heading towards Burton and South Derbyshire College in Burton on Trent.

The Fowler engine, a 5NHP, 3 speed, registration number EP2398 was new in 1924 and until 1931was used for road haulage by Ellis Jones in Newtown, Powys. Named Cynorthwywr (Welsh for ‘Helper’) the engine is now owned by the Jeffs family and resides at Klondyke Mill. This engine, designed to pull 20 tons, was towing an ex-army low loader, believed to date from around the Second World War.
The Burrell engine, registration number TB2845 was new to Isaac Ball and Sons of Wharles in 1905. This engine has been owned by the NS&CTEC since the early 60’s and has just been fully restored by Club members, having had new

gears, axles, extensive boiler work and a new canopy as well as being completely re-painted. The journey to Burton was its first major outing since restoration and it performed faultlessly.
The route took the Engines into Burton on Trent via Scropton and Tutbury, through the centre of Burton to the College, where they arrived at about 10:00. Staff at the College had made sure the roller was accessible and loading went ahead without a hitch. The Burrell engine was used to manoeuvre the roller out of the College yard and onto the trailer. Once it was loaded, and fastened down, the return journey could begin. The route out of Burton involves
