Government & Housing Legalities

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By Charles Tassell, Director of Governmental Affairs

never forget you.”

“You’ve changed me forever. And I’ll ~ Kiera Cass, The Elite

It has been an honor and a privilege Charles Tassell

to work with so many great people in this industry over the past 22 years. In early May I tendered my resignation to the Executive Vice President. The Board has a new and highly competent liaison that will be filling the role of government af-

fairs. His name is Pat Crowley and some of you may recognize him from his work with the Outreach Board. As I am also a mem- ber of GCNKAA I will remain involved at the Ohio Apartment Association (OAA) where I serve as Treasurer and will participate, as time allows, on the Legislative Committee. As always, I would be remiss if I didn’t invite you to participate in the Legislative Committee as well! It meets the 2nd Thursday of the Month at 8:30 am - presently on Zoom. Please let myself (charles@gcnkaa. org) or pat@gcnkaa.org know if you would like to be included in the email invites and updates. The Ohio Apartment Association has been dealing with a va-

riety of bills, many of which were detailed last month. However, there are two keys issues that are taking up most of the legisla- tors’ time: The Capital Budget and the Governor’s Health Orders. While the latter may be coming to end, even before the Legislature forces the issue through a bill overriding the Governor’s veto, al- lowing them to assign a taskforce to review and nullify extended Emergency Health Orders, the Capital Budget is complicated by additional federal funds. In the last week of May several updates and guidelines were posted by the US Treasury Department on how the funds could and could not be spent…which creates even more haggling over the distribution. In the meantime, there are several bills of interest that OAA is supporting, including those addressing property tax appeals. At the local level, GCNKAA has been heavily involved with

the Rent Assistance Program funds from both state and federal sources coming through the City of Cincinnati and the various counties. Please keep an eye out on the community resources page of the website for ongoing updates as the March Stimulus Bill loosened the rules even more, so additional applicants may be qualified to receive assistance. Finally, thank you all again for your support and participation over the years. It has been a pleasure working with you!

This heading deals with housing & legal issues within the Governmental structure.
