Holding plastics
When cutting or gluing plastic it needs to be secured firmly to keep the parts in place. Tools used for gripping plastic are similar to the tools used for gripping wood.
Joining plastics
Joining plastics is similar to joining wood. Screws, nails and glue can be used.
Refer to the adhesives section to identify adhesives that can be used to join plastic.
Safety
Be careful when cutting plastic as you can create very sharp edges. Always make sure that the plastic is secured before you start to cut.
Melted plastic is extremely hot and can cause severe damage. Always wear protective gloves when working with heated plastic.
Electrically powered tools Electric drill
Electric drills come in many sizes. Drill bits are attached to the front end of the drill to perform various functions.
Some drill bits are used for wood and some for metal, concrete or stone.
Always make sure about the size of the bit before you start drilling as it is almost impossible to make a hole smaller.
Disc sander
Disc sanders can be used to smooth large wooden surfaces. Sanding discs are attached to the circular surface of the tool. The sanding discs come in coarse to very fine forms.
Soldering iron
A soldering iron is used together with soft soldering wire to join electrical components neatly and securely to a circuit board.
Safety
Electrically powered tools are not toys. They are very dangerous pieces of equipment and should be handled with extreme care.
