Activity 1 Investigate lifting mechanisms

1 Look at the pictures in Figure 1 on page 124 and answer these questions: 1.1 What would each of these structures be made from? 1.2 Which would be able to carry a heavy load? 1.3 What height could each system lift? 1.4 What would limit the height with each system?

2 Use the information in Figure 3 on page 125 to answer these questions: 2.1 Explain why there are two sloping frames coming from the top of the structure towards the ground on the right.

2.2 If your structure has only to lift a maximum of 10 tonnes, does it need to be as big as this structure?

3 Using the information in this book and other sources such as the library or the Internet, investigate lifting mechanisms (wire, rope- driven mine headgear) used at South African mines.

(10) Enviromental impact assessment

Before you implement your ideas and designs, you need to make sure that the system you create will not damage the environment. Mining has always had an impact on people and the environment. Many people today are concerned about the environment. People are concerned about pollution of rivers, the destruction of trees and plants, and the visual damage caused by buildings and structures on the rural landscape. We need to understand that any development has an effect on the world around us.

Activity 2 Draft a report

In all outdoor engineering projects, it is a requirement to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

Explain how your proposal is going to affect the environment and what specifications you have added to your design to limit these effects.
