Practical Assessment Task (PAT) Tendering for contracts New word
geologist: a person who studies rocks and layers in the earth
South Africa is a country rich in mineral resources. Mining occurs to some extent in every province. Copper and iron ore are mined in the Northern Cape and Limpopo, chrome and platinum in Limpopo and North West, and gold in Gauteng and the Free State. Coal, the main fuel used to generate electricity, is mined in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, titanium is mined in the Eastern Cape and phosphate in the Western Cape. These mines do not operate in the same way: some are deep mines sunk into the Earth’s surface and others are surface or open-cast mines. A commercially viable ore body containing platinum has been found.
Geologists have determined that the ore lies at a depth of 550 m below the surface. A decision has been taken to sink a shaft to this depth in order to take samples. These will then be tested to determine if there is a viable quantity to justify establishing a mining operation. Your mechanical engineering company decides to submit a tender for the construction of the shaft headgear, which would be suitable to transport miners up and down the shaft and to lift the ore samples to the surface. The loads on the system must not exceed 10 tonnes (about 10 000 kg) at any one time. You will need to research, plan, design, cost, evaluate and communicate a solution in order to submit a tender for this project.
Investigation skills There are a number of ways that heavy objects can be lifted.
