In Activity 6 you used indirect commands. Complete the following activity to learn how to make indirect statements.


Activity 10: Use indirect statements 1 Read the Language box on indirect statements below.


Indirect (reported) statements


Look at this example of a direct and indirect statement. Direct statement: “It will be dark by the time we cross the river.” Indirect statement: The women said that it would be dark by the time they crossed the river.


Here is how to make indirect statements: • Use a subject, for example, the women. • Then use the words said that.


• Change all the verbs in direct speech (will, cross) to the past tense (would, crossed), because we are reporting what the subject said.


• Change any pronouns in direct speech like this: I


→ she/he we → they


• Leave out inverted commas. 2 Change what these people are saying into indirect statements.


The women have far to go home.
