3 Now do this activity as a class: Go around the class and make a chain of commands in direct speech and report them in indirect speech like this: • Learner 1 gives a command to Learner 2. • Learner 2 asks Learner 3 what the command was and Learner 3 replies giving the indirect command.

• Each time someone gives a command, write it down in indirect speech. Continue around the class.

Go to my desk.

What did she tell you to do?

Activity 7: Challenge: Write indirect commands

Do this activity by yourself. Change all the notices in the cartoon about shoplifting into indirect commands. Start each indirect command like this:

The notice commanded us …

She told me to go to her desk.

Listening and speaking: Prepared reading aloud

You listened to somebody reading at the beginning of this unit. In the next activity you must choose a passage, between five and ten sentences long (or three short paragraphs), lasting two to three minutes to read aloud to your class and your teacher.

Activity 8: Prepare to read aloud

This activity is for formal assessment so make sure you know how to read aloud well. Read the tips on the next page for reading aloud.

When you have read the tips and chosen your reading passage you can prepare to read aloud.
