Activity 5: Read a cartoon


A cartoonist heard a news report that women and children were shoplifting (stealing things from shops) in East London, so the cartoonist drew a cartoon about it.


Before reading Discuss these questions as a class.


1 Have you ever seen cartoons in a newspaper? What are they usually about?


2 Do you have to read the newspaper reports to understand the cartoons?


While reading Answer the following questions.


1 Who are the three people shown in the cartoon? 2 What sentence types do the notices on the shelves use? 3 Who is speaking? How do you know this?


After reading Work with a partner to answer these questions.


1 Look at the picture in the cartoon. a. How do we know that the woman on the trolley is a security guard?


b. What has the security guard done to the other woman? c. What has the angry woman got in the top of her dress? d. Who is the child inside the trolley? e. How can you tell that the woman and the child are angry?
