A cartoonist heard a news report that women and children were shoplifting (stealing things from shops) in East London, so the cartoonist drew a cartoon about it.


Before reading Discuss these questions as a class.


1 Have you ever seen cartoons in a newspaper? What are they usually about?


2 Do you have to read the newspaper reports to understand the cartoons?


While reading Answer the following questions.


1 Who are the three people shown in the cartoon? 2 What sentence types do the notices on the shelves use? 3 Who is speaking? How do you know this?
