Term 2 Topic 5 Unit 5 Stories about the Buddha

There are hundreds of stories about how the Buddha became a wise and holy man. Before he became the Buddha, he acted as many different people from different times. 1. The King and the Deer (a deer is a kind of a buck) There was once a king who went hunting. He was going to kill a doe (a mother deer) with her young fawn (her baby deer) but suddenly a male buck (called a stag) stepped forward in front of the deer, bravely asking to be killed in her place. The King was so impressed by the stag’s bravery and kindness that he vowed never to hunt and kill animals again. 2. The Monkey King A king from a place called Benares in India went out hunting monkeys. He chased them to a river, where many monkeys were trying to escape from his arrows. A monkey king made a bridge over the river with his body, so that all the other monkeys could escape. At the end, the monkey king fell on some stones next to the river and hurt his back and could not escape himself. The King of Benares was so amazed by the monkey’s self-sacrifice that he bathed the animal’s wounds. 3. The Serpent (Snake) King There was a water snake which would go out of the water to pray to God and to go without food (fasting) so that he could concentrate on God. One day, the snake was caught by a human king. He took the human king to see his snake kingdom under the water. The king asked, “Why do you want to leave this beautiful place?” The snake answered “Because I want to be born again as a man, and be a good soul”. 4. The sheltering cobra One day the Buddha was sitting quietly and meditating outdoors. A rain storm started and the Buddha was getting wet. A cobra called Mucalinda felt sorry for him and coiled his body around the Buddha to keep him dry. Mucalinda made a hood over the Buddha’s head with his own hood, like an umbrella over the Buddha.

Term 3 Topic 1 Unit 1 Example of an information card

African Cicadas African cicadas are a type of beetle. They lay eggs. Once the egg has hatched, the larva (worm) tunnels underground. It lives next to the roots of a tree, sucking sap (juice) from the roots. It can live there for up to 17 years. When it is ready, it digs its way out. Above the ground, it sheds (crawls out of) its old skin. It is now a beetle with wings. The male cicadas can make a very loud noise with their bodies.
