Week 1: Beginning Knowledge and Personal and Social Wellbeing
Activity 1: Sources of water Focus: Water – why we need water, sources of water we use LB p. 5 Time: 30 minutes
1. Look at the picture on Learner’s Book page 5 and ask the learners to name all the sources of water. Ask learners if they know of any other places water may come from that are not in the picture, for example icebergs or the sea.
2. Ask the learners to group the sources of water into two groups. Ask them to give each group a title or a description to show why they belong in that group.
Activity 2: Water is important Focus: Water – why we need water, sources of water we use LB p. 5 Time: 30 minutes
1. Ask the learners to list all the places they can think of that have water in them, for example our bodies, the sea, rivers, homes, swimming pools, dams, etc. Emphasise the importance of water to plants, animals and humans.
2. Look at the pictures on Learner’s Book page 5. Discuss the importance of rivers as a source of water. Ask the learners to tell you about the water that they use in their homes. What do they use it for? Where does it come from? Is it clean when it comes into their homes or do they still have to clean it?

Activity 3: Different types of food Focus: Different types of food – for growth, energy, health
Time: 1 hour 1. Explain the functions of different types of food and show them the examples:
» Foods for energy (carbohydrates and fats): cereal, rice, bread, potatoes, butter » Foods for growing (protein and calcium): meat, fish, nuts, milk, cheese » Foods for health (vitamins): fruit and vegetables
2. Divide class into groups of 3 or 4. Each group has a piece of newsprint or large sheet of paper divided into three columns. The learners write the headings “Energy”, “Growing” and “Health”. The learners can then draw or cut out and stick on examples of foods in each column. Display work and discuss any foods that have been drawn or placed in the incorrect column. Encourage the learners to give a reason for their decision.

Activity 4: Sun facts Resources

Focus: Sunlight – include protection from the Sun • Less sunburn LB p. 7 Time: 30 minutes
Ask the learners to think about what would happen if the Sun suddenly cooled down. They can write their ideas on a spider diagram. Some ideas are: • Plants would die • More ice on the land
