1. Hand out the sheets of white paper. Tell your learners that they will be designing their own tablecloth using patterns.


2. Hand out the wax crayons. Ask your learners to divide their tablecloth into stripes. The stripes could be horizontal, vertical or diagonal.


3. Ask your learners to create a different pattern in each stripe. At this point, they just create the shapes and do not add colour to them. Once they have created a pattern, they can add hot or cool colours, using the wax crayons, to some but not all of the shapes and patterns.


4. Divide your drawing ink into sets of hot and cool colours and hand them out along with medium paintbrushes.


5. Ask your learners to carefully add the ink colour to their tablecloths, choosing the opposite set of colours i.e. if they have used hot colours for the wax crayons they should use cool colours for the ink.


6. Pre-draw circles on sheets of paper or card. Hand these out along with black wax crayons. Ask your learners to create a plate of their favourite healthy food. They can add colour using pastel and cut the plate out once it’s complete. They can also create knives and forks using strips of cardboard.


7. Once all this is complete, they stick the plate of food and the knives and forks onto the tablecloth.


Week 1: Physical Education Activity 11: Playing Crocodile Island


Focus: Co-ordination: Throwing beanbags to a partner Time: 15-20 minutes


1. Divide learners into groups of 6–12. Each group should have three hoops. Place the hoops one in front of the other 2–5 m apart.


2. Choose three learners or ask for volunteers to each stand in a hoop or “island”. The learners on the islands have a ball or beanbag which they must pass to one another without stepping off their islands. The other learners are the “crocodiles”. The crocodiles must try to get the ball or beanbag without stepping on an island. If a crocodile catches the ball or beanbag, then they swap places with the learner on the island.

Make sure that your learners don’t make their stripes too narrow as this makes it diffi cult and time consuming for them to add patterns later.

Tip


Warm up before every Physical Education lesson with a deep breathing exercise to relax and focus the learners. Breathe in for 4 and out for 6 to 8 breaths, 4 times.


Time: 20-30 minutes


1. Divide learners into groups of three and give each group a skipping rope. Learners take turns to swing the rope and one learner jumps. Ask learners to start swinging the rope at a slow speed.


2. As the learner gains confi dence and can easily skip until a count of 10, ask the learner to crouch and touch the ground with their hands in between jumps. Repeat 10 to 15 times.


3. Once the learners can easily complete step 2, ask them to do a 360° spin between jumps. Repeat 10-15 times.


4. Ask the learners what other movements/tricks they can perform. Activity 13: Balancing games


Focus: Balance: Work in pairs facing one another with legs stretched out and feet touching, holding hands, pull and push forwards and backwards soles of feet together; Repeat standing up using hands to push against one another with feet fl at on the ground
