“We Won” B

y arr: L y B y err We were super excited

and honored to have received both a 1st and a 2nd place award in com- munications from the International Association of Fairs and Expos this past year. While our

industry has been deeply impacted by the pandemic, we remain strong as we move into the new year searching for ways to be more creative. The 1st place award was given to us for a contest event

we did on social media called the Rock Scavenger Hunt. We wanted to get our 4H youth involved and pro- mote our sponsors with this contest. We provided land- scape rocks to some of our youth and asked them to paint one side. We had some amazing submissions with every- thing from depictions of animals to a Ferris wheel. On the back side we numbered the rocks for tracking purpos- es. Rocks would be placed at our sponsor locations with rhymes of the clues as to where to find them were posted on social media. Guests would then attempt to solve the clue by using our web site and knowing our spon- sors. One of the examples of a rhyme was:

In the advent of an emergency they are always there They support the community with passion and care You might want to celebrate for where it will be Relax by the flag pole for what you seek

If you solved this riddle, you would have found the rock

near the Emergency entrance flag pole at Celebration Hos- pital; which is part of Advent Health, one of our main spon- sors. Prizes included a family pack of tickets to the fair or

four unlimited ride armbands. We had over 20,000 guests follow or like the scavenger hunt which was held over a two week period before the fair. Our sponsors loved it because it promoted them and made people actually go to their store or business locations, the 4H kids loved contributing to the contest, and of course the guests were ecstatic to win tickets and carnival ride bands for the fair. Guests were posting asking if we were going to do it this year, and in 2021 we again highlighted our sponsors; however, also used historical sites in the county with our theme being, “Strength in Youth, Strong in Heritage.” We were very proud when several fairs throughout the country contacted us and wanted more details of how they could put together their own rock scavenger hunt. Our second place award was based on a mistake. Yes, I

said a mistake. There is an old saying, “check twice, print once,” or something like that. Well, we received our busi- ness posters back from the printer and after delivering to about half of the businesses in the county discovered Feb- ruary was spelled wrong. If you’re wondering who was responsible for checking the poster for accuracy, that would be me. For about fifteen minutes my staff heard me ranting about how I had missed this, when an idea came into my brain. Yes, the same brain that made the mis- take. I posted on Facebook there was a mistake on the posters delivered to businesses, and if you discovered that mistake and was the first one to correctly identify the error you would win a family pack of ride bands and tickets. We had guests and sponsors comment what a clever idea it was to purposely have a mistake on the poster and make it a contest. Little did they know. Creativity is one of the di- verse sides of fair management, and sometimes you need to take the lemons that life hands us and let the creativity juices flow to handle the challenges we face and make some lemonade. So the next time you’re designing your poster or other collateral material and you make a mis- take…turn it into a win.
