Marina Rubicón, Lanzarote, Canary Islands


L


ocated in the South of Lanzarote, between the natural monument of los Ajaches and Playa Blanca, Marina Rubicón


provides magnificent opportunities to sail and train all year around. It is a full-service marina with its own pool on this member of Spain’s temperate Canary Islands and has hosted several international sailing events. Since 2011, it has invested in bringing talented dinghy sailors for coaching camps in the marina due


to the island’s excellent sea, wind and temperature conditions. These efforts are now bearing fruit with 35 nationalities having brought Olympic training teams to the island and the European and African qualifiers for three dinghy classes (49er, FX and Nacra 17) taking place from 19-26 March. This regatta will be organised by the Canary Islands Sailing Federation and Marina Rubicón, with the support of the Canary Islands Government. The schedule provides

around 15 races plus Medal Race on three different courses. Construction of the marina began in 2000 and took three years to complete. Following a limited period for further development and staff training, the marina was fully opened in 2004, since when it has continued to expand its facilities and services to become a sports, commercial and leisure centre of the highest standard that appeals equally to leisure sailors, ocean


cruisers and Olympic competitors. It provides 550 berths with finger piers for both single-hulled craft and multi-hulls up to 50 metres. There is also an area to accommodate larger yachts of up to 90 metres alongside the breakwater, which culminates in a helicopter landing pad. The marina’s aluminium floating


pontoons installed by Aister are decked with tropical hardwood treated to resist the effects of UV light and secured to piles. Berths are supplied
