“And so with the amount of rural crime that we’re seeing — and a lot of that rural crime is being driven by addiction and drugs — we thought it was time to bring the drug treatment court,which has a proven track record, to cities like Lethbridge that we announced earlier this year,Medicine Hat now,and we announced one in Red Deer as well, to serve as kind of hubs for the surrounding communities as well, to pro- vide those treatments to individuals that are quite often round- ing through our justice system and we’re not dealing with why they’re there in the first place,”said Schweitzer. New funding will be used to establish drug treatment courts in


Medicine Hat,Red Deer and Lethbridge by late 2021,as well as two additional sites that are yet to be determined. “I think they’re going to have a lot of success,”said Schweitzer.


“They’re based off of proven programs and proven strategies in other areas, and they’re there to address a very specific issue that we have


right now in so many of our rural communities, which is addictions and property crime. So we’re going at this prob- lem with a multi-pronged approach to make sure that we go after the organized crime element to get the drugs off the street, but at the same time being compassionate to those that are suffering from addictions and giving them that opportunity to receive treatment.” With a $50 million budget increase from government, ALERT is increasing its ability to target serious and organized crime by reinforcing existing units and developing new strate-


gies to respond to emerging trends. “We’ve heard loud and clear from Albertans that they want to feel


safe in their communities.Rural crime is a crisis, and at a crisis level. And in order to be able to tackle rural crime,we have to deal with addictions,and we have to deal with the organized crime element that is bringing drugs into our communities.”
