With restrictions now less stringent than at the height of the lock-
down, this doesn’t mean essential visitors to the facility should take the risk of the virus lightly. “We are very hopeful as essential visitors are coming into the building and families are taking residents outside of the building that those parties are as willing to follow the medical orders and ensure that the residents are masked, the visitors are masked and everyone is following social distancing rules,”said Janzen.“The reali- ty of living in a building with 78 residents means that the actions of one party could potentially affect 77 other
residents. Most people seem to get that and act accordingly; but not all
do.The age and medical conditions of Clearview Lodge residents would place them in the highest risk category. Our organization is committed to ensure safety of the residents and will continue to make operational deci- sions — within the requirements of the Medical Orders — that reflect that commitment.” Clearview Lodge has often gone above and beyond provincial
requirements to ensure residents are safe. “We have tried to follow the medical orders from Dr. Hinshaw to the letter,”said Janzen.“There are always some areas open to inter- pretation which AHS and Alberta Health have tried to address by regular videoconference meetings and lots of emails and discussion. At times, our organization may have even exceeded the orders by restricting access to the lodge. For several months, only essential visi- tors (at that time defined as those individuals essential to the provi- sion of care) were allowed in the
building. As a result, the only peo- ple we let into the building were staff and AHS HomeCare staff. This allowed us to efficiently screen anyone entering the facility as required by the medical order. I would say this was extremely effec- tive as we did not have a single COVID case for staff or
residents. As well,we noted significant decreases in other minor ailments like coughs, runny noses, sore throats, et cetera, that seem to befall everyone throughout the year.”
