Why did you choose September? To avoid the summer tourists and the Scottish midges! Are you pleased you did it? Thrilled. When I found out I had Parkinson’s I was shocked I must admit. When you are fit and healthy you think you are invincible, ‘nothing could happen to me’ but it can. So I’m pleased I have completed such a big challenge and helped out a worthy cause. PIERS What were your top moments? Being off the beaten track and seeing quieter parts of the country that I have never seen before. We planned our route along the east coast avoiding busy roads, hills and most cities. We regularly found ourselves on towpaths, disused railways and farm tracks which was lovely. Where did you all sleep? For the first week Kate and I slept in our campervan and we put Kit in a small tent under our awning.
We couldn’t let him inside as he snores very loudly! When Penny joined us they stayed in their hired campervan. We did wild camping mostly as we had all the facilities we needed on board. How did you charge the all important bike batteries? The campervan has solar panels so we had two on charge all the time which we kept swapping. Were there any bike mishaps? None, we went all that way without a puncture or a slipped chain. Did any local companies help out at all? Paul Tomlin, who owns Big Peaks bicycle store in Ashburton provided us with a support package - which included a Garmin. That was so helpful and we want to say a big thank you to Paul and his staff for their support. Another round of applause goes to Nigel Roberts, James Eastwood and Gareth Whitehouse of Trek Bikes who provided back up lithium batteries
for the duration of the ride . Did you do much training? Not a great deal. I’m pretty sporty - I do a lot of mountain biking, paddle boarding and wind surfing. What kept you going? Flapjacks! We got through a lot. Also, an occasional beer and large portions of pasta and rice. Was there a final celebration? Kate poured a bottle of champagne over us at Lands End! Then we went to the Dunes and sat drinking another bottle whilst overlooking St Ives.
