precious with many hours spent teaching her GCSE English class, holding meetings and walking the site. “One of my favourite things to
do is roam around the corridors hovering unseen, at classroom doors! I love listening to what’s going on and more often than not I’m impressed to witness curious enthusiastic learners.” She can often be found looking out of the window in the canteen which has a sweeping view down to the Dart: “I sometimes have to pinch myself! It’s completely different to the busy built up area I worked in before and I try to appreciate it everyday.” Emily met her husband during
her teacher-training course, he is an assistant head in a school in Exeter and she says it’s nice to have a shared passion: “We do talk about work over the dinner table, not excessively, but it is a relief to chat through problems now and
again. My partner is ‘midweek chef’ at home – he’s an excellent cook! But we also enjoy the odd Thai takeaway.” When the pair, who live in Torbay, aren’t discussing

for the academy? Well, Emily said they are working hard to make sure
children stay happy and healthy. They want all children to feel like ‘scholars’ in their work, enjoying the challenge that learning brings. They want to create more linked learning opportunities throughout the school - so if a student is learning about Ancient Egypt in history they could then do an art project on the subject and learn more about Egypt in geography. They also want to maintain a
positive learning environment encouraging kindness and confidence: “It’s quite special to think we are part of something exciting up here. We are investing in children’s futures and helping them become responsible, caring people who will soon find their place in the world - I feel privileged to be a part of their journey.”

OCTOBER 2020
The South Hams Society was set up almost sixty years ago with the aim of stimulating interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of the South Hams and, in particular, the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It works to encourage high standards of planning and architecture which are in keeping with the landscape and local building traditions, meet local housing and employment needs and promote environmental sustainability. It actively lobbies the Local Planning Authority (SHDC) and others with influence on planning matters, relying on its in-house expertise. It also offers free, impartial advice to others, including individual campaigns and residents groups. The Society is a registered charity which enjoys a strong membership and financial stability. It is currently run by an active Committee
of seven which includes four trustees.
