Dartmouth United Charities is a local charity providing almshouse accommodation and small grants to residents of Dartmouth. The almshouse provision includes 5 family houses in Townstal and 19 flats in Victoria Road suited to more mature residents and include support from a part-time warden.

The DUC receives generous funding each year from its half share of the surplus income generated by the investment activities of The Dartmouth Trust. These funds help trustees to maintain the properties to a good standard, to provide reasonably priced accommodation to the residents and to donate money to individuals and local organisations such as Dartmouth Caring, The Hub at Townstal and The Pantry at the Flavel who all provide invaluable support to local people in need. Application forms and guidance for grants can be found on the charities website www.dartmouthunitedcharities.org.uk

In recent years any surplus monies have been invested in expanding the provision of family housing where it is felt there is the greatest need. The houses all include outdoor space and are provided at low cost to enable families to save for a deposit for their next home. The charities are currently in the process of purchasing a further family home and will be shortly advertising for applicants in the local paper.

Dartmouth United Charities was established thanks to individual bequests many years ago. It is run by a group of voluntary trustees and salaried staff for the benefit of local people, according to guidelines drawn up by The Almshouse Association in conjunction with the Charity Commission’s objectives as set out in the governing document. The Board comprises of 9 Trustees, 7 who are recruited through public advertising and 2 are nominated by Dartmouth Town Council. Decisions are taken collectively by Trustees, and the board benefits from the variety of skills and experience offered by individuals. There is currently a vacancy for a Trustee.
